Title: Sir'ed!!! well kind of :)
Post by: Just Shelly on June 29, 2014, 12:12:36 PM
Its been many years since  was "sir'ed" "him'ed" I guess you could say I was one of the lucky ones.

Well all that just came to an end.....at least I thought!

I was at a convenience store purchasing some sort of wrapped sandwich type thingy....When I went to pay for it the girl stated what I was paying for and said...."one wrap sir!!" I was wondering if I heard that right and thought maybe she said wrapster....I had to ask, indeed she did say wrapster and she replied yes I always call them that and giggled.

I can say I pretty comfortable in my skin and rarely worry that I may not be gendered correctly....I'm possibly as close to feeling that how I am gendered is something I don't even think about too often . So when I heard this I was more shocked that she would call me sir than not blending in, similar to if I was gendered female when I was a male.

I am posting this cause I thought it was really funny but I also wrote this because my thought process would of been different 3-4 years ago when I was more concerned about blending in. I just wanted to tell anyone else that is early on in transition and constantly worrying about blending in....it will eventually fade away....and then you only have to worry about how well you look!! :)

I got "sir'ed" on the telephone the other day.

Usually when I answer a ringing phone I always give my name, then the other end cannot refer to me as anything other than a female and they know my gender.

However, I had to call a number for some information recently and I didn't give my name so, quite naturally the other end, because of my voice, thought I was not female and "sir'ed" me.

I pointed out my name and the other party was most apologetic.

Maybe there should be a worldwide campaign called, "Don't assume my gender".

I used to get most upset but these days unless it is obvious the other party wants to make a point I let it go over my head.

I used to work drive through at KFC and we had this game where we guessed M/F and if they were hot or not. We were almost always wrong on the hot/not, but we were wrong on the M/F quite a bit. Its hard to tell with just a voice.
