I enjoy having longer hair and I was wondering how other MTF's felt about it.
Here's a guide to what the options equate to for the purposes of this poll.
It used to be to right about to my waist, I wouldn't mind it back there again. Right now it just feels too short, but I had to cut lots off when I went blonde because that hair bleaching stuff was way too hard on my hair.
I have had my hair long my entire adult life, I don't know what I would do with short hair lol.
I always liked having long hair even from a very young age. The way I used to wear my hair actually made people gender me pretty consistently as female when I was little. That is, until my mom insisted on cutting it. :'( Right now my hair is a bit past collar length, which I think is where I'd like to keep it. Having long hair is nice, but at a certain point it starts to become a chore to take care of it properly, and I think trying to keep it much longer might be more trouble than it's worth. My biggest issue right now though, is that my hair lost a lot of volume due to shedding when I started to take biotin, and now I'm going to have to wait something like a year for it to really thicken up again...
Mine was near waist length when I cut it short (moment of silence, it was a dark day).... but it's so curly when it dried it ended up somewhere around bra strap length which is about where I want it again... Pretty much the same as my avatar photo but curly! :)
Waist length, but that may just be dreaming. I have never had it below armpit length and that took three years to get to. Waves, then big loopy curls take over and I am stuck in limbo forever, like now. :) Bad hair day turns into bad hair week, turns into bad hair year.

I can definately identify with you. I would love it to be waist length it is between armpit and brastrap length now when dry. But it takes curly hair so long to get length to it.
i want collarbone length to shoulder blade length. its a lot more manageable plus i think its cuter xD
Oh what a familiar feeling to have cut and lost ;) I hated haircuts as a kid (way before the Beatles made it cool). I kept my hair very long after getting out of the army except one dismal last time when trying to look like that man again. Long hair feels like a luxury to me. Some fortunately beautiful women retain their feminine presentation with any length of hair, i gotta work it :D

I'm quite content with my hair length. When I was 8 I wanted to start growing my hair but was afraid people would guess how I felt about my given gender. It took me until I was 12 to work up the courage and have had long hair since. I haven't cut my hair now in 7 years and have dreadlocks to my waist ^_^. They're hot and heavy and actually a physical pain when they get wet but I don't see myself cutting or trimming them anytime soon

I definately had to laugh at that one about the army. God it would have felt better if they wouold have cut off my arm when I went in. And then the four years following sucked. I was always getting told when I needed a haircut. :) Now people tell me that I usually start the sentence out with a word that starts with "F" and ends with "u". Even female family members. I personally think they are just jealous though 'cause they all have short hair. ??? I have the longest hair out of all the girls in my family. On second thought, maybe I ain't the only trans member of my family. Hmmm.. food for thought on that one.
Although I'm quite fine with my current hair length the target is somewhere between shoulder and bra-strap length. That will be just optimal for the hairstyle I have in mind :-) .
I actually had to have an aggressive haircut almost exactly one year ago for a detailed EEG and no haircut since. Before that I never really had long hair.
It's growing quite quickly so I think that perhaps in spring next year I'll be on my preferred length.
I love, love love my hair! (Did I mention that I love my hair?)
Yes it's labor intensive. Yep, it's time consuming. Yes it's uncomfortable and even painful at times, depending on how I have it styled on any given day. But I do not intend to cut my hair anytime soon.
It might be a little difficult to see in my avatar photo, but I keep my hair tailbone length. I like bright, unnatural streaks of color in my hair. Right now I have a lot of hot pink, raspberry, and emerald green in my hair. At other times I've had primary red, cobalt blue, bubblegum pink, and royal purple. Everywhere I go random strangers approach me to tell me how much they love my hair. I love it too!
It's all in good fun.
Longest I've ever had was armpit length (from the chart) and it was in bad shape. This was about a month ago and now its just above shoulder length. I would love what I call butt/ass length, but I have to wonder if that would ever happen.
I am more worried about keeping what I got then length at the moment...bah to receding hairlines!
Much, Much longer then it is now. I don't have hair.
I would like to have longer hair. After 2 years i have neck length. How long it will take for armpit-length? Another 2 years? What do you think?
Hair is supposed to grow an average of about 6 inches a year, fortunately my hair seems to grow slightly faster, I've got from less than an inch to neck length in 8 months :)
It's stopped at just above bra strap and refuses to grow any more.I'm OK with this length,I can tie it back for work or bad hair days, braid it put it up.I wanted waist length hair but it doesn't happen with me or my sister, her's stopped growing at a similar length to mine though her daughters have very long hair.

Hair grows roughly at about 1/2 inch a month give or take. So six inches takes about a year. From the very top or your head to your shoulders would take about 1 3/4 years. Thing is though and the most important thing is to definately take care of it. I do not skimp on haircare products but not all priced haircare products are created equal though. So don't fall for the "if it's more expensive it must be better trap." Definately a good shampoo and conditioner is a must, definately the conditioner. Split ends suck and the only cure is cutting. Argon oil is good for the hair, a healthy diet is good too to prevent split ends. Wash warm and condition and rinse out the conditioner in cool water. Styling with heat is also a killer. If it is curly let it be curly, if it's straight let it be straight. No use fighting nature.
Don't fall for the trap of cutting it makes it grow faster or cutting it during a full moon will make it grow faster. I know old hillbilly's wives tell but if anyone calls me Granny Moses I'll hunt you down and put a hex on ya'. ;) It will grow at the rate it grows and that is give or take 1/2 inch per month. Just cut it to even it up or make it look good without taking any length from it.
This post needs alannaluvsu, I hope I spelled that right but she is definately the go to girl for hair.

You and me alike. I Loooooov my hair. If I lost my hair, I would cry. I would baWL like a little child who fell off their bike and their ice cream cone falling on the floor. Then I would become a bitter hateful shrew. That's just one of the reasons why I'm transitioning knowing I would lose the hereditary battle for hair loss otherwise. Nope. I'm saving it just in time.
I plan to probably go with highlights in my dark shiny brown hair with some emphasis around my face which should really add a feminizing touch. All these last minute details I'm stacking on top so when I decide to tip over out of andro territory and into fem full time, it will tip over mightily. Long hair, maaybe soft curls towards the ends, highlights, laser, eyebrows, nail polish, lipstick, eyeshadow, clothes, jewely and the accessories. This Evelyn sh*t will be real then, yo!
As for the poll, I want something bra strap length. (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Foi60.tinypic.com%2F2mg8qs8.jpg&hash=aa2ea192b57b87daa38a109c2120f0acd95ae312)
I like shoulder length. I used to have my hair that length when i was much younger, and still had the hair to grow... I keep it cleanly shaved now, and wear a wig when needed. (i dont look to bad with no hair though, but prefer shoulder length)
Shoulder lenght would be so nice. Mine is too thin, but I'm trying my very best with boitin & time.
I've had waist length a couple of periods in life then just cut it because I got a bad flu a ways back and couldn't take care of the hair and it got all tangled up so I cut it. I'm growing it back now, It's just above bra strap heading for my waist.
Bra strap length is what I voted for. Couple more inches and I will be there, he'll it might be there now if my hair wasn't so wavy. Hard to believe I was rockin a pixie cut 3 yrs ago
Should have a poll on color. Myself I'm blonde but would love to be a redhead. Luv me some red hair :)

I'm now at 20cm (=8 inch) in 2 years. Whats wrong there? I use silicone free shampoos and conditioners, sometimes a repair condition. My hair look healthy, has no splits, but is very thin and a bit curly. I wondered about the slow growing since a long time. :-\
My hair is currently collar length and I would like to grow it to bra strap length. I made the mistake of cutting my hair down to 1/4 inch before I started transition it was my last desperate attempt to deny that I was trans to myself. Instantly knew it was a huge mistake and have been growing it ever since about 1 year 9 months. I got my first haircut in that time and had them take off as little as possible it was only about 1/2 inch but I almost cried!

That is why I said give or take. Now, my hair is curly too and it takes about twice as long to get length as straight hair. You have to add in the curls with the length. Where my length is now is between armpit and brastrap and someome with straight hair might have taken a lot less time. Once curly hair gets longer it gets heavier and it will seem to grow faster 'cause the curls stretch a little.
Also change shampoos and conditioner and see if you can see a difference. You are roughly only four inces off than the norm growth rate. You are taking the curls into considration, huh? If it is really thin like not as many hairs per suare inch, talk to your Dr about it. If just the hair radius is thin that can be normal.
Rapunzel. :o What, too long? Okay, halfway completely down my back and hanging down across my breasts is fine. :)
Way to many years of having it boy style short while working for stuffy companies, now that I'M the boss its getting longer like I always dreamed of :)
I'm growing it an inch or two longer then trimming its as little as possible to just get rid of the damaged ends,

I found that at Penny's on my last shopping trip a couple months ago, very comfy cotton with nice lace trim and it's lined as well. Was around $25 and came in a couple other colors.

YAY :D !!! Cool!
Am on a mission too, hoping to get mine from collarbone to waist.
I've been afraid to do anything remotely connected with transgender in public, but my therapist encouraged me to change that. Starting by shaving my legs. She said I need to get used to having to deal with it and its better to start with something small. Maybe I'll actually go out and try to buy some clothes in person for a change. I've only bought them online so far.
Bra-strap length for me. It's currently at the armpit level now, but I want to grow it a few more inches. At this length you can do a lot of fun things with it. I've been recently playing with a curling iron. Sometimes (not often) I can get some to-die-for soft waves, but most of the time it looks likes it got pressed in a waffle iron :) Practice makes perfect! And I second the idea of using good hair products, that's key for having healthy hair that looks good and is fun. I love having long hair. Not cutting mine even if it's hot in the summer. Just make an updo and pin it and you're good to go.
I am happy with the near bra-strap length, but I won't stop growing it until I've tried the mid-lower back length.
I am definitely happy to be past the greasy bang length though. Now I go at least 5-6 days between washing my hair. It's really crazy how much healthier it gets when you don't wash it very often. Never really gets greasy anymore, HUGE PLUS!
My hair is currently at a Collarbone Length, I am very happy with that..
I have had my hair almost down to my bum before, but it became way too much of an issue to wash.,, so I had it cut.
considering me being awefully short for an almost 21 old mtf i would say tail bone[ thats a bit more then a meter long X D
and that is the back side!
the front

Ahh, isn't Google a wonderful thing? I could spend hours browsing there, hours better spent working!
I would like bra strap length because it I think it looks the cutest with the hairstyle I want. I basically want to do a side swept bangs and choppy layers kind of hairstyle. I can't wait for it to grow...
Collarbone to bra strap (or shoulder length), really anywhere in btwn those. I giggled at "Rapunzel" =)
I'd like to have it in a ponytail down to my lower back again. :( Unfortunately, I work in an ultra conservative city with only pockets of resistance. The industry I'm usually in demands a "neat" appearance too. A few years ago, I had to cut my gorgeous locks to get a job after losing my last long term job where appearance didn't count. If hiring managers weren't ->-bleeped-<-s, I'd still have my hair I grew out for 5 years.
I would think it would be easier to deal with the hair than the transition.

I'm wanting bra strap length, personally. I want my hair long, but so long it's unmanageable. At that length I can have a nice long ponytail or braids that aren't too short. My last haircut was about 9-10 months ago (jarhead cut, before I accepted being trans), and my bangs are just now reaching my cheekbone. It seems to be at this length that no matter what I do, it doesn't look very good. But I know that will pass.

Stuff like that always breaks my heart and brings tears to my eyes. What the crap is a "neat" appearance anyway? Some butthole that thinks he or she is the big IT and or the ultimate decider? I have certain word for people like that but I am a lady and won't say it here. But most of 'em need a napking to wipe the brown off thier noses. ;)
I <3 pixie cuts and short hair. So luckily for me, I could have my dream hair in boy mode. Going into a hairdresser's and saying "I want a pixie cut, like a girl's haircut." was an incredible moment.

I often get stuck in "business casual" environments, and they do have a way things are done for the most part. Since I am still in "guy mode" I have to play this part although I still manage to wear earrings in both ears to work. ;) I do think it's too much shock value for some people. I would be ignorant or naive to think such counterculture would be welcomed by shallow and superficial people. That's just the way it works, unfortunately. I am
soooooo looking to get the hell out of the IT industry and do something else careerwise.
I would like my hair waist length but unfortunately my school has '"rules" so this is as long as its gonna get, ( for now ) but I'm not complaining tho I love my hair. ( refer to my avatar my hair length has been like that for a year or so, I think.)
*points to profile pic* thats just the front. the back is a good 4 inches longer. Im growing mine out to tailbone/ classice, ill be there in another year or two. My hair only took a year to get this long,
Mines about the bottom of my shoulder blades atm, but shorter at the front(shoulder length). I'd like to get it down to my waist eventually though. My hair seems to grow really fast to a point then slow down.
I wish mine would not only grow longer but was *straight.* :) As it is, I've got crazy curls are also super thick (so that I've lost brushes in there), and it won't get longer than mid-back. (Well, it's almost waist-length when wet, but the curls make it look much shorter).
Waist lenght will be like the dream but for now i'm happy with a short bob or like neck length!
Ok I'm using biotin pills to make my hair grow faster kind of and they are very good, but it's making my hair grow faster on my legs too (which is not nice!)... Is that a normal thing?
Right now my hair is at mid-back length as I haven't cut it in about 14 months.
When I start presenting female I'm sure a few inches will need to be trimmed off just to keep it healthy, but from there I can't decide if I want to leave it long or go for shoulder length.
I have bad my hair in a pony tail in guy mode for 5 years... so maybe I need a change. Then again just having my hair styled at all would be significant. Sadly my hair is about as straight as hair can get (and pretty dense; ive broken a comb in it before) so there isn't much I can do with it without applying damaging heat.
Bra Strap Length would look nice with my natural dreads. Just started the process back in late March and my dreads are around chin length at the moment.
When I first transitioned many years ago now, I grew out my hair continuously for 7 years before I got over the fear of cutting it. I like long hair, but that was too much, it gets tangled too easily and it's a pain to keep the snarls out. These days I keep it a little longer than shoulder length and that works just fine for me.
I like my hair at bra strap length, but I just had 3 inches taken off a couple of weeks ago, because I get my hair highlighted a lot, and I had some bad ends. :'(
I actually had my hair length goal before HRT, bra strap length... unfortunately my hair pre-HRT? Not so sturdy. Constant tangles, horrible split ends, very fine. It looked okay at a distance, but up close it was damaged... so last weekend I got it cropped at jaw length. Actually had a bit of a dysphoric spell over it. Still, at least this way, all the stuff coming in now is sturdier and healthier and doesn't tangle as easily. *sighs unhappily* still, two years of no hair cuts was undone in less than half an hour...
I got mine to be almost waist length about 20 years ago, then it got really hot one summer and I cut it to neck length. It grew back to armpit length, then I got drunk and told people I'd cut it all off for $500. I grew it back out for about 3 years, then chopped it off again while desperate for finding work. Then I got another job as a guitar tech. *facepalm* I kept farming the hair, but gradually the ponytail got thinner and thinner to the point where I was about ready to call it a day and chop it for good because I didn't want to be "that guy" on whom it just looks pathetic. Well, in the end, I just didn't want to be "a guy" at all and went on finasteride immediately. The good news was that it went to work quickly, and estrogen and dutasteride really made it come back thicker than it had been in ages. The bad news is that it looked pretty ratty with it at all different lengths, so I have to chop an inch or two every 2-3 months until it all evens out. So, if you're still reading for some reason and keeping score, it's now at shoulder/collarbone length. I'm hoping to have it bra strap length and even in a couple of years. Wow, the hair will be the last thing on my transition agenda (transgenda?) after SRS. How freakin' ironic is that?
When I was younger and with the exception of a wayward 9 years,I always had waist length hair. When I began having problems my hair wouldn't grow too much past shoulder length. Now that those problems with my head hair have been reversed due to my AA's and E, and my hair is thickening and growing again I'd looooove to have my waist length hair back. And the way it's growing it won't be too long before I get there. It's past my bra strap now in the back!, YaY!
I keep a feathered deep V cut in the back so my sides, which are at boob length (Avatar photo was snapped yesterday) are shorter than the middle which is about 5" past my bra strap.
Tip: Your nail health reflects your hair health. If your nails are healthy, your hair should be. But if your nails crack and split/break easily, so will your hair. I take a good women's multi and also a good hair, skin, and nails vitamins and do my best to eat healthy. You may not think it, but it makes a difference.

My bangs go down past my belly button. It's pretty long.
I don't really have a set 'goal'; I've worn my hair long since my early teens (so like 8 years now) and have been all over the place.
I had let it grow down to my bellybutton when I decided to hack it all off to just at my collarbone; since then I've gong longer and shorter longer and shorter, until I settled at a comfortable shoulder length where I am now :)
It seems for me there is a very small window of what 'looks good'. Much longer and I think I look silly, much shorter and it's just not as flattering, so for the time being this is it.
This is a fun idea for a thread.
Miharu Barbie, I love, love love your hair, too! You're absolutely gorgeous. Wear it that length for as long as you can.
I've been around a long time and I had nearly waist length hair in the early '90s and loved it. Alas, I no longer have the volume for it, I still love my hair. Every few months I trim it back to about a "lob", then grow it to about the collarbone. My current scheme is to pick up a top hairpiece to help with my upper volume a bit, go with a beige-to-blonde highlight coloration and wear it in a flippy shoulder/collar style. As you get on in years, you have to get strategic about these things.

Mine was almost to my waist when I donated almost a foot. My bf and mom think it looks more feminine shorter, but I really like long hair
I want my hair down to my ass but ear-length hair just fits my big head much better and makes me look much more feminine. My stylist and everyone else tells me that everyday. I do miss my long hair and wish I could pull it off but it makes my head look bigger for some reason.
