Title: Transitioning with Kids
Post by: EmersonJ on July 06, 2014, 05:37:47 AM
Just wondering how many of you are parents and how old your children were when you began transitioning? This is the most difficult part for me right now, and it's the one and only thing that has me hesitant about going forward with a full transition.

My son is 6 and my daughter is 18 months. While I'm not as worried about the little one, my son has already started school, has already begun to make friends and I've already started meeting parents and PTA and all of that. I'm just not sure how I should handle it?

Any advice? Has anyone else been here in this situation?

Welcome to Susan's, hugs

I started when my daughter was 14 1/2. She is turning 17 next month. My wife outed me in June in a very awkward way. My daughter had a week where things wee tense but now things are good, as long as I do not express, that will come in time.

6 is young and they are very resilient. Jennifer Boylan has 13 books, one of which was about raising her 2 children. I would seek out a gender therapist that deals with adolescents. That person would have a lot of experience dealing with this issue.

My son (15) was nervous the first few days I went full time, but now is completely fine with the fact Dad is becoming Mom. I think it helps I am passable and exude confidence when we are out and about. It is no longer awkward for him to be out with me and even holds doors and lift's things for me. My daughter (16) is a hard core Southern Baptist with absolutely no tolerance for GLBT members of society. She moved out with her mother and does not communicate in any way with me.

My son is four and is fine with it. Many people here, including the school he is starting in the fall, are LGBT friendly, so it's not too bad. It is a little awkward correcting people though since I don't pass much yet and two biological dads aren't exactly common.

Our kids are 9, 6 and 4 and are fine with it. I'm not out in the community yet though.

My son is a little older, 29. :D

He's in nursing school and a little uncomfortable with me, but he says I'm still his parent and still family, so we're good.

We'll see what kind if greeting I get when I go see him next weekend.
