...but not surprised. I just found out that my employers health insurance doesn't cover SRS, it's an "exclusion." I know that's a long way off at any rate. I'm trying to find out if there are "any" benefits covered for the transition process but I'm not hopeful.
I'm going to have to weigh purchasing my own insurance vs paying for everything out of pocket.

Don't count out your employers insurance just yet and do shop around for perhaps a secondary insurance to supplement.
My endo and therapist both use somewhat generic diagnosis codes that allow for the coverage of my medications and care that allow me to have my insurance pay for my HRT and endo visits. I can see about what those codes are if you need them. ICD-9 but soon I should be able to see what the equivalent ICD-10 codes are.
As for SRS unless you know that that's exactly what you want just wait. I am considering just an orchiectomy which is covered by my insurance. If I decide that I want full SRS then I have considered getting a second coverage that will cover it and using my primary to foot some of the other charges that aren't directly related to SRS.
Also some folks here have worked with their employers to get an exception to have their insurance pay for the surgery regardless of the exclusion.
So you have options. And you aren't alone. Many of us are doing the financial balancing act as well.
