Title: leg waxing
Post by: daisybelle on July 21, 2014, 11:57:21 PM
Okay... I wanted my legs waxed.  I found a shop that seemed reasonable .   They also do electrolysis on men.   I thought great I can have both services done.  I email to set up appointment. .. and this is what I get back:

In regards to leg waxing, I perform that service on females only. Too difficult to negotiate a price and timeframe with men.

Should I tell her I'm transgendered.    Does that make a difference?

D

Not sure if being rude, or misunderstanding. Perhaps they just have set rules, and didn't want to be rude, but still had to tell you. But that does seem like a dumb rule. But you know, if you want, you can make your own homemade wax, and just use strips of a cut up old shirt, and it works just fine. Here's how to do it.

Otherwise if you're still persistent on this appointment, I guess it can't hurt to at least say that you are trans. You wouldn't know unless you try if that would make a difference.

But Are Those Rules discriminatory?

I've had similar problems with differences in prices or availability of gendered services, and I think if you aren't feeling particularly fragile it might be useful to come out as trans and see if that clears things up.

Yeah, that's really tough. I mean, it sounds like it could be discrimination, but maybe she didn't mean anything by it. Also perhaps, it's not illegal if it's just a small place, but I would think size wouldn't matter on that. However, unless you would take her to court for it, sadly, I don't think anything would be done about it :(

If you're on hrt then your body hair will be just like a cis females so being trans shouldn't be an issue(weaker hairs vs guy hair). Men are tougher just because of the amount of hair they produce thanks to testosterone and how stubborn those hairs can be. Hence why I guess she said that about time frame/scheduling, it would take them a lot longer to clear vs a female's leg hair.

Like Felix said tell her your trans, might help

It could also have to do with the privacy level of their facilities. Getting your legs waxed is bound to put your, ahem, "factory equipment" on display to some degree. They may need to arrange times when no one else is being waxed.
