Title: Going semi-full time at work?
Post by: PrincessPatience on July 22, 2014, 01:46:43 AM
I just started this new job at nordstorm rack. So far everyone is really friendly and I like it. It's very casual setting. We just have wear a green shirt and jeans etc. However at work I have to be in "guy" mode (wearing a afro toupee since my real hair is long) and I absolutely hate it. I was thinking of maybe where my real hair and wearing light makeup. Just light coverage foundation and things to cover up any 5 o clock shadows. Nordstorm rack has a LGBT friendly policy and the store manager is a gay.( even tho my experience with gay men is a little bad when it comes to trans people.) so do you guys think it's a good idea to go semi-full time or not? I haven't came out to them yet cause idk if I'll lose my job despite their LGBT and gender identity policy.

Isn't it illegal to fire someone because they're trans?
Whatever the case, it's really up to you. They say you should never work in a place you hate. So you basically have to make mental decisions as to if the pay is worth staying there for a long time, or if you just would rather be short time, and giving more time to be a girl, but of course less money that way. Perhaps you could get a second side part time job though. Otherwise, if you just really end up despising it so much, then I really recommend find a different job. It's not good to work where you hate.

(hehe. This was post 123. Now I need to get to 1234 XD)

I'm only staying here for 6 months because I'm going back to school in January. I just need the money to pay for electroylsis and VFS. I have another job opertunity but I know for fact i can't go semi-full time working there. The hiring manger and store manager here at my job are really nice to me. I just don't know me wearing my real hair and light make-up would ruin my chance of staying hired there. Not being yourself is really draining at times along with dsyphoria.

yeah. I know what you mean. But like I said, just think about what do you need more, the money for a short time of going through something you don't like, or full time what you do like, just not getting much money for it.

Companies with a large retail presence tend to be very accomodating. They know full well that being nice about it is more profitable than being bigots because bad publicity hurts the bottom line. And since they already have policies in place, I say go for it.

Depends on where you live. In most of the US, Transgender is not a protected class.

I know exactly how you feel.  I've had to go 'guy mode' at work the past 8 months while passing outside of work... my reason though was because I'd worked there for a few years pre-HRT.  If it's only for 6 months though I'd say try and tough it out if you can, and if not then quit.  At least your not in a situation where you have to do it to pay the rent / bills etc.

Solid advice.

With only 6 months, the stress might outweigh the benefit... But that is entirely up to you!

Transition hit me like a freight train, and there was no other option but to transition immediately regardless of work.

At my work i just pulled the frig in pot thing. I just kept changing little by little till wa-la. Here i am and i just changed and as i morphed my male name it was just easy. Id say dont do it to shove trans in their face but ad a little makeup, shoe style, earings til...you know. :)

Be happy, life is short.

Was  called out for wearing makeup at work today. So have to be in male mode which is annoying.

You don't need to be in male mode, you just need to be in less makeup mode.
Plenty of women don't wear much makeup or any.
With most of the women I work with, if they have on lip gloss, it's a lot of makeup for them.

I wasn't able to come out at work. I think that it's nearly impossible to deal with stress of transitioning at work. I just ended up finding new job 7 months after HRT and restarted life fresh as a girl.
