Title: NHS wigs for transgender m2f (UK)
Post by: Tony2Toni on July 23, 2014, 08:05:01 AM
Does anyone know If m2f transexuals (transgender) are eligible for free NHS wigs.?

I received a document from the NHS the other day saying I'm eligible for a list of  free thing, prescription charges etc..
also on the list was free NHS wigs and support..

So today armed with this info I went to see my doctor,I explained that my name and gender has been changed to female, and as I'm bald I need to wear wigs all the time (as a bald woman would).. can she give me a prescription (showing her my document I received from the NHS)..

She had no idea and needs to look into it . but she agreed with my reasoning..

Has anyone come across this before?  Toni..

Update............ more googling and it seems I need to be refered by my doctor to the hospital and they're the ones that give the prescription..
Though I need to have a hair problem to be refered.. and male pattern baldness is not a hospital problem.. although I'm female..

latest update .....  It seems that as I'm refered to the GIC they are my equivelent to a hair specialist..
So I'll have to wait for my appointment to see them.. and see what they to say .......... wait wait wait ..

Just quote the guidelines to them, maybe it'd work, good luck!
