Title: Naming Dilemma
Post by: Eris on July 27, 2014, 11:51:48 AM
When I asked my parents what they would have named me had I been born anatomically correct the response was Erin.
I felt that this was a nice name, but that it didn't quite feel right to me.
I looked at similar names and rediscovered Eris (the Greek deity who started the Trojan war with a shiny piece of fruit and the 10th "planet" in our solar system).

All was well until my father voiced the opinion that people might mishear it as "arse"...
Now I find myself in a dilemma, I still like the name but not the possible implications of going by it.

I'd like to ask you to say the name aloud and see whether you feel that that it... sounds like "arse" XD
If required here's an example of how it is pronounced. I prefer eh-riss to ee-riss so would be leaning more in that direction.

I would really appreciate some help with this.

Voted No, doesnt sound like 'arse' at all

I like it but its very uncommon, something to keep in mind ;)

I used the same letter as my male name, it felt a lot 'closer' and easier to get in to. I wouldnt have chosen Jessica for example :p

Thankyou Yin :)
It's a fair point about the rarity of the name.
I guess that I don't really feel that it would stand out too much because of it's relative brevity.
Sadly I don't really find myself drawn to female names beginning with M :(

I think it's a gorgeous name and if you want it, go for it!  It is an unusual name for sure, but I think it's fine.  This is just my opinion though.

This is easy to help with...our playtime on "Last Post Wins" is a lot harder..grrr! :P

Names with an M that don't resonate? Hmm...sure there's something...check this website: http://www.behindthename.com/names/gender/feminine/18
I used that website a lot for gaming characters and there's a lot of different cultural backgrounds they've collected from. Take a look :)

Thanks, I'm pretty set on Eris but it's reassuring to get this response :) And thanks whoever chose option E, I had a good chuckle

There are some interesting names here, most websites seem to just offer the most common american-ish names.

I would consider using an M name to replace my middle name which I've never been fond of. I like Mai, but if you put it together Eris Mai sounds a little like Erase my.
I got a bit of stick for "Christie" at school XD I suppose I could change it to something like Christine or Christina, but I rather like the idea of having a Celtic or Gaelic middle name.

Erin is similar and may work if you decide that Eris is not quite right. I have not personally heard that name before.

I guess I read something about her as a child, I was always interested by mythology XD.

As the Olympian goddess of Discord she wasn't invited to a wedding because of her trouble-making tendencies but showed up anyway and left a golden apple engraved with "to the fairest one" which the other deities promptly squabbled over. Zeus appointed Paris of Troy as the judge and Hera, Athena and Aphrodite tried to woo him with their bodies and with bribery. Hera offered him political power, Athena offered him infinite wisdom and Aphrodite offered him Helen of Troy. He chose poorly and brought destruction upon his city according to the tale.

Well, you said Erin has a nice sound to you but doesn't feel right, and that's exactly the kind of mindset that should guide you when picking names. To put it in short: Just pick one that expresses YOU.

When I started thinking about names, for some reason I just KNEW: Noah. It's exactly how I see myself. Your personal process may not be as fast, it will all sort itself out.

And while my judgment for what suits you and who you are will not be as good as yours, I think Eris is a fine name :) And no, it doesn't make me think of arse.
