Title: Voice concerns
Post by: Auroramarianna on August 07, 2014, 05:19:47 PM
I have posted about my voice elsewhere, but here it gets a lot more traffic.

I'm worried my voice may actually be way too high, and get me in trouble, especially cuz I can't present as female right now. Do you believe it is too high for a nealy 18 year old?? I mean, I obviously got picked on a lot for my feminine voice, even though I don't really care, and my manneirisms and appearance have made some question.

I have many more recordings, but I believe these are enough for now.

Thank you for reading,

PAAAaaSSSSSSS

If you can get it a tad little less nasaly (or whiny?), either way, as it is it sounds great. Better than most I've heard here without surgery.

Awww, thank you :)

I get congestioned a lot and I just don't know if my voice is age appropriate, so I'm worried, because it may be too high even for a female.

Your voice sounds very feminine and natural in my opinion. ^.^ I'm still trying to work on mine but I always think someone might hear me.

Auroramarianna,

You could absolutely go a bit lower if you wanted to go for a more natural sounding voice; to me, it does sound very young, and if your range is what I think it is, you could do even better than you are already.  In that upper register, things sound strained, and I can't imagine that it isn't uncomfortable for you to speak that way.  When the time comes and you want to go for a passable female voice, I would absolutely use a deeper, richer tone...when it comes to voice, a number different factors come into play: Cadence, pitch, timbere, and so on.  Even though your voice is still much higher in pitch than most male voices, the flat quality of sound makes it feel artificial, and when you're trying to pass sounding natural is key.  Try speaking from your chest, and using that (I'm going to assume) amazing range of yours while speaking...you have a great baseline to start from, and I'm sure you'll go very far with a bit of practice!

Best of luck,
Sasha

Thank you girls for the replies :)

Yes, I realize my voice is way too high and babyish and I'm trying to get it a bit lower and richer, like you said, androgynouspainter. And I'm also trying to get it to be more expressive. The recordings are old so I should post more to see it it has improved.

Thanks for the input!!

Good point above, you definitely can bring it down a register. Perhaps the C range? This would help ease up your voice box and very slight "whiney" sound.

Seriously, your voice is so natural sounding. Good job.

Sasha, I understand how you say it feels artificial, but it's quite naturally occurring to me :) Although sometimes I do strain, and I'm trying to get it down! I'll post more records when I can!

This recording is older. Just want to know if there is any improvement from these to the ones I have posted earlier. :)

It's an improvement, for sure!  I'd still try to go lower, by a third or so, if only because speaking that high in your register is going to eventually have consequences down the road (and I say this as a singer).
