Title: So today I put on MAC Lady Danger lipstick. I burst out laughing, then cried.

I looked like a damn clown. That was $20 down the drain. I could have bought 3 McDonalds Happy Meals with that! (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Foi58.tinypic.com%2Fw8982p.jpg&hash=b6fa9b7547af495455e45504bab78c074185a37a)

Well it is a nice colour but you will need to consider the total package when wearing something that vibrant. Make up is like the interior of the house - change the drapes and you need to change the lounge and carpet and...

Plus what you're wearing makes a big difference, etc. It's complicated stuff which cis women have had many years to practice and get right.

I see myself throwing down a grand for makeup just to find the right mixes and such. It's not a brag, it's just unfortunate. Would be keen if they had like makeup bundles with complimentary colors for each area all ready to go.

Or maybe I can hire a studio makeup artist to work out the best combinations.

Walking around these makeup isles is daunting, it seems 10X more complicated than anything I've ever encountered at like The Home Depot. :(

Start with neutrals and work your way from there...

I bought the cheap stuff and started experimenting my colours and techniques from there. Agree with Luna, go with the neutral colours first.

Most cis-women don't generally walk around in every day wear in fire truck red lipstick, unless their models, hookers or kiss-o-grams.

What did you wear on your eyes and face? Wearing a bold colour may have certain rules that may apply :) Did you overdraw your lips?

Nope just a dainty draw within my lips.

Yeah I agree about neutrals lol.

Well, I love the color but like others have said there is a time and place for it other than everyday wear. Like going out to a club and so on. But it definitely has to match the boldness of the other makeup you are wearing.

Hiring someone would be a good idea but if you have any girl friends they would be able to help you and for free.

Yeah, the makeup isles are intimidating but you have to buy according to your complexion, the look you are trying to go for as either more natural or made up and so on. Daytime make up and nighttime makeup. The thing is making everything match. Pretty much it is trial and error at what works and what don't. But natural looking makeup seems to work best in everyday situations matched to your complexion and eye color. Less is more in the world of makeup.

And not everyone can actually pull off that colour. - even at the best of times..

Oddly, matching nails may help - one of my grandma's rules, a stand out red like that requires matching nails.. A rule also suggested to me by a Dior-trained makeup artist..

I agree with everyone else - the color needs to mach your makeup, your skin tone, and what you are wearing. I have yet to find a lipstick that I think looks good on me so I just use lip gloss instead.

Maybe you could make a trip to the makeup counter and have one of the ladies there help you choose a lipstick color? I know it's scary but they won't bite, and you'll save money by not having to play the guessing game.

Another option is to make your own cheap lipstick. There are a number of videos on youtube showing how to do that using crayons. If you try a color that is wrong for you then you are only out a couple of crayons.

Getting this right without professional help is challenging.  The colors that my mother has are right for her but look sickly on me.  I'm not big on makeup anyway and I would never feel right in blazingly bold colors.

Perhaps you could salvage part of your investment by dressing up as said 'clown' for Halloween this year?  <shrugs>  Maybe make it an evil clown for fun and terror.  If you wanna do "Insane Clown Posse" I'll join!

I don't use any lipstick anymore, jut lip gloss, balm, and stain. The problem is, the stuff is almost always so extreme looking, that unless you are so done up like you are going to a photoshoot you just look wrong.

I am pretty sure I would cry over $20 because that is less than it would cost to go to my fav conveyer sushi place twice.

A nice color lipstick that is not over bearing is pink. Not hot pink though. It kind of adds to the natural color of your lips without being over bearing or over the top color.

Have you tried putting that lipstick that you bought on a little lightly? Just enough to give the color but not overly too much. Or using a really small brush to apply it even? I still love that color though. Especially if you put it on lightly and then add a little lip gloss to it. In my opinion it wasn't a waste of money, it just takes practice to get enough on for the color but not too much that it is over bearing.

You do have to be careful with bold colours like that (and the name says a lot about the colour!). More neutral eyes and face go along well with a bold lip colour, although some people can pull off bright eyeshadows with noticeable red lipsticks. Some people can get away with blue eyeshadow and something like MAC's Russian Red. Hairstyle, too, can affect how all of this comes across, alongside what you're wearing. I hope you'll be able to use it somehow so that money isn't down the drain.

Maybe post a photo if you end up wearing it again?

I went to Macy's shortly after morning opening, there was hardly any customers so I went to the Clinique kiosk and one of the gals there made up my face. It was fun and initially would have cost me nothing but I wound up purchasing a lot of stuff I never used, might as well have lit a couple of hundred dollars on fire. I found that just a little is better, usually more toward subdued than bold. Two girls come to mind that look cis real to me (Just Shelly and Hikari). A lot of goop troweled on one's face isn't the answer to look good and fit in to the cis female world.

I am not wearing it again lolz! I find for me a half streak of dark silver eyeliner on my bottom lid and no lipstick is working for me. I don't use eyeshadow or anything to create that smokey effect. Who wants raccoon eyes? Maybe a little blush on my cheeks.

Ultimately, different things work for different people. One of my cis- female friends is almost never without a bold lip colour every day, without wearing much of anything else on her face, and it looks great on her. There's nothing wrong with either subtle or bolder looks if you pull said looks off. Less makeup is usually the safer option, but wearing slightly more doesn't automatically entail being clocked more easily.

I was lucky, it didn't take much experimenting at all for me to find the subtle colors that works best on my ugly horsey-face.  Plus a few little tips from my sister from years ago.  A long time ago when I did go to a few trans group things, they had a professional make up artist at one and I asked her and she said there was nothing at all wrong with my makeup.

Big thing I think is to stay clear of the bold stuff until you learn the subtle stuff first. Then if you wish, you can add in a few bolder colors and such just to see.

Oh and if I get my nails done too red, my late father's girlfriend would tell me I have whore colors going, lol.   I used to have my toenails painted bright red just to get to her...

It's a nice color - no doubting that - but try not to feel it's your fault. Do you have a friend you could ask for help from? If it's too daunting to go into a shop and ask someone, it might be easier to ask a friend, but only if you feel comfortable. As for Happy Meals, I'd not fret, it has probably done your health some good avoiding it!

Sometimes I buy stuff that I just don't know how to wear properly at the time...and then later on I figure out how to wear it so that it looks good.

Also....don't forget that there is a big difference between your day look and night look. I certainly would never go to work wearing what I go out dancing in, for example.

And then there's things like what lighting you'll be in...and how long you expect to be wearing it (12 hours at work, or three hours at dinner and a movie).

One of the most overwhelming things about this whole process when I first started was makeup...and now the more I learn, the more I find out I don't know, and the more excited I get to play.

Blend blend and blend some more -you must know how to blend. Everybody is different but you can get an idea of what might look best on you by studying other women with a similar facial shape as yours, and more important, the same skin tone as you have. Doing this will only give you ideas. However to find out what colors work best on you will take some trial and error.

Some rules to live by: As others have pointed out, daytime and nightime are different and will require different shades and colors for each. During the day keep it simple. Less equals more and stick to neutral colors. Brighter colors generally work better at night. Rain and humidity will make the cheap stuff run. And time you'll be out is always a factor.

I have a dark reddish olive skin tone that's hard to match. Most of the time I have to blend lights and darks to get the color that's best. During the day I basically stick to earth tones and keep things light. Maybe a bronze eyeshadow with gold overlay generally looks best on me with brown eyeliner, and because of the heat here in Florida I avoid a lot of foundations/concealers. Just a little under my eyes to match things up and cover my scars as best as possible. At night a deep blue eyeshadow with silver overlay and blue or black eyeliner, and I can be a little more liberal with foundations/concealers but not much. The single most important rule is "less is more." I have naturally thick long eyelashes that eliminate any need for mascara.

For my lips only one color looks okay on me and that is a deep pink, and only at night. During the day I only use gloss or nothing at all. I was taught my makeup by a professional beautician in Hollywood during my recovery from my 91 accident. I lived in an apartment above her shop off Whitley & Hollywood Blvd.

Hope it helps

Okay, this is the most important thing about trying feminine things and failing:

Don't take it personally.

Basically, not everything feminine works on everyone. You have to find your own style, and you have to find what works for you. When I first started transition, I really wanted to wear cute things. Pastel colors, tank tops, cute accessories, nerdy t-shirts, etc. But my bone structure, hair color, build, and skin texture wouldn't allow it. So I kept experimenting and experimenting and slowly discovered that a more elegant style, with deeper reds and purples and royal blues and basic business-like black and white, looked much better on me.

So yeah... don't go into that destructive mindset of "NOTHING works on me!" No. When something doesn't work, it just means that you need to try something else until it does work. And it takes time, and it takes a LOT of trial and error.

Thanks for that. Will check it out.

So tonight I tried this new stuff called "Mascara". I think I spelled it right... Anyway I usually just have some dark silver eyeliner along the outer half of my bottom eyelids.

Just swept this "Mascara" thingamajig brush thingy along my eyelashes like they show on youtube.

Ummmm. Wow. Where have you been all my life!

Glad it works for you.

I have tried this "Mascara" you speak of many times, and it just looks a mess on my face every time without fail. No amount of lash curlers will curl my lashes upwards to enable proper use of said "Mascara" for me.

Thankfully there's false lashes to the rescue.  ;D

A basic rule with makeup...less is more.

I learned early on by reading books like "makeup for dummies" and a couple others (forgot the names), but the most basic takeaway was there are three elementary styles:

1. You can emphasis the eyes;

2. You can emphasize the lips;

3. You can create an overall "natural", soft look.

Just don't do everything at once.

Another bit of advice is don't wear your makeup to bed at night, use a good makeup remover. There's nothing cool about going to work with raccoon eyes, especially if you haven't yet come out in the workplace.

I wouldn't take it to heart.  I personally have bought a lot of useless (at least on me) ->-bleeped-<- since beginning transition.  Think of it as a learning experience.

Ahha but I have to offer a second viewpoint, for some reason my eyeliner always looks better the second day it's in use ;)

My makeup routine has evolved end over end over end over the course of my transition..

Starting out, with maximal beard shadow, I literally caked the stuff on daily. Started with BB creams and mascara, lip balm

Then, I slowly made the switch to concealer (for better beard coverage) and eyeliner with the mascara (gamechanger)

Followed by several months of tweaking to find the right concealer tone / amount, still caking it a bit, stopped using anything on lips

Followed by several months of toning everything down, now just a few dabs of concealer on upper lip and under/over eyes, eyeliner and mascara tend to last 2-3 days ;)

Makeup takes me no more than 10 minutes, whereas when I started with the stuff it was a 90 minute ORDEAL

Points well taken Jenny, and I know there are some good waterproof non-runny eyeliners on the market. My point was intended as advice for those who still have to present male in the workplace. Anyway, I should probably recuse myself from this thread as all I use  is a little Clinique "Chubby Stick" to give my lips a little tint, a make-up person I'm not!

Ahhh I see now, I totally missed that part of "not out yet at work"

Yeah imo eyeliner is one of the most feminizing pieces of any makeup arsenal. Actually for me going full time coincided with about the same time I started using the stuff!

I can't reasonably take credit to the application of eyeliner, I learned everything I know from a Sephora makeup specialist. She nailed it!

Another bit of advice is don't wear your makeup to bed at night, use a good makeup remover. There's nothing cool about going to work with raccoon eyes, especially if you haven't yet come out in the workplace.

I learned this the hard way TODAY.

I wake up with RACCOON EYES. What boggles me is I'm sure as heck I haven't rubbed my eyes (fingers edges are clean) and I sleep facing upwards. WTF?

And this stuff is hard to wipe out with makeup remover cloths. It's like a nightmare skid mark in your undees!

Pea sized amount of extra virgin unrefined coconut oil, gently apply to eye area and let sit for 3-5min, gently wipe off with a warm washcloth. Boom all eye makeup slips right off!

The key is not scrubbing hard at your face at all, natural oils are the best oils for longevity.

I use coconut oil more as a makeup remover & moisturizer than I do as a cooking oil! ;)

I am a coconut oil aficionado too, great treatment for the skin.

I second this^^___^^. Jenny hit on a great thing with coconut  oil. Not only does it remove makeup well but it's great for your skin also. I've been using it for years, and attribute it to helping me look younger than I really am. :icon_yes:

Oh, my eyeliner still looks great on the second day too. All that's required is a little touchup. My makeup routine takes me only around 15 minutes each day.

@Jenny: Your looking great girl! How have you been?

Er, so so. It'd be better if the rain would quit. Hey, I'll be moving west after my SRS this December and I'm healed enough to do so. I'm just sick of this rain and humidity. The reason I didn't go back home to California in the first place was I wanted a mother-daughter relationship with my adopted Mom -don't look like that's going to happen so why not be where I'm happiest?

Anyhoo, you look radiant and glowing Jenny. Like your on top of the world. Hopefully once I get back out west I'll be much happier than I am here. You can take the Native American out of the desert, but you can't take the desert out of the Native American, and it's time I went back home.

Heck yes, desert time for me too please! My body always seems to reward me there. Seriously though Allyda, thank you so much for your kind words about my well being. It really warmed my heart to read and I thought you should know... Thank you.

The desert definitely has a calming effect. It's easy for me to see why it makes you the happiest, because it makes me really happy too. I looooove a good hot spring.

Aaaaaannnyway.. ;) Maybe this is getting a bit O/T??

On that note.. I don't think I've worn lipstick in 2014 yet? How did that happen? I used to love that stuff

Heyya Jenny - how did you open the conversation with the Sephora specialist? How much work did they put onto you? How long did it take? Costs?

And yeah eyeliner and mascara has been transformative for me. I'm passing without it, but now, MUST WEAR.

I also use this in Alloy (dark grey). Seems to be popular pen on Amazon.

I was at about 5% of transition completion, deep into my androgynous "not giving a f***" phase. Walked in wearing black sneakerwedges and a leather jacket, straight up just told her that I was looking for a good night look... that I was interested in finding a good eyeliner and seeing how to use it. I also mentioned wanting eye shadow, mascara, and perhaps a bronzer. She was delighted!

The consultation was free. I think they expect you to spend at least $50 on makeup, though... But if you find a salesperson that likes you, they will do it all for you no matter how little you are buying.

Oh and btw right now I'm using Bobbi Brown's darkest black gel eyeliner and applying it with a sephora angled liner brush.

I also like Maybelline's gel pot eyeliner, too, which I think costs 1/5 as much :P

I just recently switched to gel, for the longest time I was using Urban Decay's waterproof gel pencil thing... Just got so tedious and being detailed was impossible and a pain. Gel eyeliner has changed my life.

+1 on the gel eyeliner in a pot.

The pencil stuff was hopeless for me, it kept skipping on my eyelids and liquid liner with a felt tip kept drying out.

I wasn't even in transition and went to the makeup counter, in of all places Little Rock Arkansas (The redneck capital of the US), and told the lady I needed to look really girly. After a shocked look and a moment of silence and giving her a 50 dollar tip, I walked out with 200 dollars of makeup and a lot of informative help, some of which I played like I didn't really need at the time like daytime make up and nighttime makeup for my skin tone, eye color and hair color and so on. Funny thing, is I went in looking like a biker sans the facial hair and came out looking like a hooker. ;D It was the Eighties after all and then I had to teach the other band members to apply makeup. I left the daytime lessons out though but glad I got this woman showed me. ;) In the eighties, 50 dollars went a lot father than it does today.

I did the Sephora "special occasion makeover" 3 times a few years back, which was minimum $50 purchase. Each time I told them I was going to a party, and I'd gone in with a small amount of makeup on (which I let them take it off and start over again). Back then, Sephora was carrying the Temptu airbrush! Don't know why they stopped carrying it, because that thing is awesome! But, yeah, seems like YMMV depending on which store and artist you get. One store I went to, in San Luis Obispo, she took the time to write out everything a list that she'd used and told me to come back anytime I wanted her to get me started on using the stuff. I went into my store here in Dayton to grab a couple products with no makeup on and facial hair mildly showing, and was addressed by my proper name (which shows up on my Beauty Insider card) and the ladies were super cool. The vast majority of the time that I go to Sephora to get makeup, I've felt treated very well regardless of how I've presented!

I've been wanting to switch to the gels myself. I heard they're much better and longer lasting. They'd prolly hold up better in this Florida heat and humidity too.

I've been lauding the benefits of gels for a few years, my sister in law got me started on them, much easier to use and no real pressure to apply.

Wow that is really great to hear! I went into the Sephora at "The Greene" in Beavercreek when I was about 2 weeks on HRT and had similar treatment. No weird stares or anything. Southwest Ohio seems to be doing pretty well :) Well, the Sephora's at least ;)

I hope she likes it! You have to apply that stuff with an angled brush, anything like this
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sephora.com%2Fproductimages%2Fsku%2Fs1419621-main-hero-300.jpg&hash=f2c2c312ba6f39e6c92b22fc3813c660bcd0493a)

I use the one that came in a sephora brush kit, but I suspect there are much cheaper options at a drug store that are just as good. Heck she probably already has one :P
