Title: will runnning without a bra or binder help burn chest fat?
Post by: KamTheMan on August 16, 2014, 05:56:06 PM
hey guys. i've been beyond dysphoric about my chest lately. about to start a hardcore workout regime/diet to burn as much fat as possible in the hopes that some of it will come off my chest. my chest is pretty small (definitely getting the peri surgery, and i'll never ever be able to hold a pencil under one of my chesticles), so it doesn't bounce too uncomfortably when unbound. i'm wondering if i let my chest hang loose when i run at night, if the bouncing motion will help burn fat from that area. i hope this isn't a dumb question. binding is causing me unbelievable stress these days, and especially in regards to working out. thanks everyone!

Running without support is unlikely to help you burn more fat, since the bouncing motion is not caused by muscle contraction. You might run more comfortably, and probably faster/longer if you wear a well fitting sports bra/compression shirt, and that can help you burn more calories.

No. Breast tissue is different than other fat in that, unfortunately, it generally can't be reduced through exercise except in extreme (and usually unhealthy) cases. Only other time is generally when someone is already carrying more body fat and reduces is it, in which case they might experience fat loss on their chest that isn't actually breast tissue.

Dang it. Oh well. I'm still gonna work on burnin fat, building muscle, and saving money for surgery. Just gotta try to stay motivated and patient!

Throwing this out there too since no one mentioned it yet, "spot reduction" (targeting fat loss to a specific region via exercising the muscles in that region, eating or not eating specific foods, etc.) is a myth. Unfortunately it's a myth propagated by people who make money off the idea ("Buy our product and/or service and blast belly fat fast!").

For sure, man! Don't let it discourage you! Following a proper workout programme is still, imo, a great way to deal with dysphoria since at least you'll be slowly changing your body to feel better in your own skin (muscle mass etc.) Good luck! :)

From what I have seen online, running without a bra is useful to be more perky. A good all around weight training regime with cardio should have a greater effect on fat reduction. I may be blowing hot air but I would assume that the same principle for loosing belly fat would apply to loosing chest fat.

It doesn't. Unfortunately, a body that's assigned female at birth/already gone through female puberty generally considers breast fat as essential to reproductive function and so is among the last fat deposits the body will lose. That means that someone would likely have to enter a state of extreme fat loss, at which point they'd probably be dealing with some kind of eating disorder or illness. Only other possibility is if someone has a very small chest while also having larger amount of muscle mass and very low body fat (less than 12% at the very, very least) as in the case of some competitive female bodybuilders. However, if a person did have a very small chest size and was on testosterone it'd probably still take them less time to gather the funds for surgery than strive for something that may or may not actually happen.
