Like have you tried it? Is it worthwhile to practice screaming?
As high as my own voice is, I can't seem to hit that shrieking far-carrying note. I'm trying to decide if I should add this to my list of dysphoria's or not.
I mean at least sounding hysterical is a feminine trait.
All I have to say is: be careful!
Very low percentage of MtF's have this capability to shriek super high up there after 1st pubertal voice change, and if you try to force it without gradually training yourself back up there (if even possible) you can easily do irreversible damage to your vocal cords.
I lost my ability to shriek when my voice changed as a teenager, and even with vocal fold shortening I am still unable to do get back up there... Although I am able to squeal now ;)
After VFS I can shout much higher than I used to be able to (and it does sound very feminine), but I never push it too hard because it is plain dangerous. You could easily land yourself with a hemorrhage and a disabled vocal fold which to put it frankly screws a lot of things up.
Everyone please promise to be very careful when testing their limits!
I can and have, but have no control of when and where. It ususally happens when my body is caught completley unaweares. (Walking backwards near stairs, turn handle then open door, turn around step and see furniture and walls that I walk past everyday).
Now if this is my bodies flight or fight response yippie skippie. But it is something I don't really want to test in real life.
I wouldn't dare.
If I need to scream for defense, I have other vocal tools at my disposal.
A life or death situation is not a time to work on my girl scream.
I used to be able to and loved that I could before puberty. :( I remember back in primary school I'd scream really loudly like a girl just for fun but I actually liked doing it. I've thought about this quiet a few times actually. I guess you could practice it but you'd have to be practising it properly to prevent any damage to your vocal chords. Even then, I don't think you could get it to the point of a very high-pitched shriek.
It kind of can be practiced, but I would not venture to try and explain it on a forum, since there is danger of vocal damage if done improperly.
Pretty sure that during my early days of practicing female shriek voice (pre VFS) I damaged things a little bit. When I had my pre-op exam at Yeson, they found a small (and presumably quite recent) hemorrhage on one side of my vocal cords. My vocal cord on the opposite side had grown bigger to compensate for the other damaged side. Luckily the hemorrage was below the point at which they tied up my vocal cords and at a year post op it had disappeared. The asymmetry was also corrected with the surgery.
Throw in the risk of voice box damage during tracheal shave and you have a recipe for disaster when pushing your voice super hard. Be careful out there laides
I've shrieked once like a girl. I was suffering from extreme sleep deprivation to the point that I was hallucinating. I saw a giant spider trying to grab me with its front legs in the darkness beside my bed. That time I let out a pretty convincing girl scream, but it wasn't by design.
Of course I cant do it...
thats why I never scream, cause a disgusting male voice comes out...
even talking is painful...
My screams always sound shrill and feminine. Set me up for ridicule on occasion.

I wonder how Aerosmith or Michael Jackson gets away with it. :D
Interesting info on the hemorrhage. Vocal cords can tear I believe.

How is your voice training going?
I find the irritation after training makes me cough up a little excess phlegm afterwards. It's really gets scratchy after awhile.

I wouldn't even know how to attempt to do this intentionally to find out. The only time I can ever remember doing a girl shriek was when I busted myself up pretty good when I was fairly young (pre-puberty, but I can't remember anything specific). I came running into the house, blood gushing down my face and shrieking at the top of my lungs. To be completely honest, I hope I never find out if I can still make that sound.
I never practiced... but once I got comfortable with my voice, it just happened reflexively. Which is good, because it would be REALLY embarrassing for me to howl in a male voice while presenting female. Even when I'm startled or tickled, I shriek like a girl.
(Honestly, I kind of always did; I had to work *not* to do a high-pitched screech when people thought I was a guy. Maybe that was a hint years ago. :) )

Fight or flight.
I doubt I could scream like a girl but I can kick the family jewels just like one.
If you feel the need to practice something then try running in heels, that could be more of a lifesaver than any girly shriek
If it's any compensation, I'm pre-T but I cannot scream or shriek like a girl at all without my voice cracking. Not all cis girls can.
No.
My voice sounds passable enough when I speak, but screaming or singing gives me away.
I miss singing. :'(

Only one way to know. You have to be in danger. A girl shriek is often triggered by survival instintic and does not come easy consciously. Many cis girls can't do them.

Even if they can, most will lose it with age. Look at any old school female punk rocker that is still going for a good example of that.

Flight for me every time

I haven't tested my scream lately; hey, lets all get together and go see some male strippers
Well, there's always practicing like this....

Ewwwwwww
No...just.....no.
My yelps are routinely rather feminine. I haven't actually screamed tho.
Let's all compete. Everyone got a microphone handy?
What kind of a scream is that? Shantel can do much much better!

Yep I can but not on command it just happens instinctively. Awhile back a friend of mine jumped out around a corner and scared the crap out of me and I shrieked. And when I'm at a club or watching a show and all the women scream the wooooooooo, I can finally join in on that and it feels GREAT! 4 years of vocal practice has been paying off. Now just have to get my singing voice down.
