Title: Hairstyles
Post by: Blue Senpai on September 04, 2014, 08:57:20 PM
Being pre-T, I was basically catering to every whim for the sake of my mother:
"Don't get your hair cut short."
"Shave your legs, you're not walking to the gym like that."
"Come here, I'll take off your mustache."

I just realized how sad this was considering I'm over the age of 18 and now I'm determined to just say "screw this" and go to the barber for a haircut because the one I have right now is suddenly depressing me due to it having the constant bed head look and looking like a lion's mane and if I wait 3 months, it'll be past my shoulder and that's not what I want.

What would be a decent masculine haircut for my face shape (I think it's oval)?

One like the fellow in your avatar would look pretty swell.  Some kind of shorter on the sides longer on the top pompadour type thing might be neat too.  I fear the one above might come off a little like a pixie cut.  I like a good shaggy long cut though.  Its not far off from how I get mine cut (and then the curls take over =p).

Depends though, really.  Are you trying for distinctly male? or just more masculine?

Really a moustache? I don't think guys really care too much about the shape of their face when it comes to hairstyle.

Sorry to but in on your guys threads but if you are over 18, do what you want.

Personal opinion. Let the 'stache grow, grow the hair on your legs and let the hair on your head grow. Guys with long hair that just seem not to care about it are sooooooo much more interesting than guys with short hair. My advice, get rid of the layers and let that hair grow and let it grow like you don't care. Again sorry for butting in.

I think you'd look good with just about any short style.

It's really, really fun to just go for it and have them shave your head (to like a one inch length). I got that for the back and sides of my hair, and as soon as my new comb attachment for my trimmer arrives, I'm going to do it myself all over. Kinda scary but fun and weird in a very good way.

one inch doesn't count as shaving. only less than 10 mm ever does. and i actually once get a haircut, cut with scissors and comb, at 8 mm at the shortest.

my favorite type of male haircut is 1 inch on top, and short in the neck and around the ears. comb to the front to hide hairline.
korean boyband members have some interesting haircuts to look at.
if you don't know how you want it, just get a classic very short haircut. and get inspired as your hair grows out.

I would say go with whatever hairstyle you like.  Look on the net and find something that speaks to you.

Taka: I definitely just meant "using the shaver machine thingy." I wouldn't consider my haircut a shaved head or even a proper undercut.

I second the recommendation of the avatar's haircut. I think you'd look dapper. But please, I do not recommend shaving/buzzing your head to a very short length and having it layerless and just that "buzzed" style because for Pre-T FtMs especially it looks very unflattering and emphasizes the roundness of our faces and soft features. Not to mention in some areas someone could be perceived more often than not as a lesbian with such haircut since it seems to have a place in that community. Those are my two cents though. I first read about the no-no about the short buzz on a blog that was giving out passing tips. But again, go for what you feel comfortable with!!

Maleth: I agree with avoiding the short hair as a rule for a lot of people... but I feel like in this case Marcellow could pull it off and it'd look really good.

The risk of being seen as a lesbian is probably still there, though.

Yeah, I think that there's a chance that he could pull it off if I try now to imagine him a bit more with that haircut. A very few people can really pull it off as FtMs unless they have strong masculine features and/or have been on T for a bit. It's a good, "tough" style but the problems concerning it are still there. I myself would get my hair cut quite short however I am not on T and my non-receding hairline would make me appear even younger and more feminine than I am.

Short on the back and sides (maybe 1/2 in to a inch) w/some length top can give your face a squarer look. It's also read as more traditionally male than something with bangs. If you're concerned about passing as a guy, I would avoid something shaggy or alternative (like a pompador), but there's nothing wrong with experimenting or going shorter gradually if you want.

It's just barely noticeable for me to enjoy it but my mom has amazing eyesight and she's like "you need it taken off, it's awful."

I do a frohawk type hairstyle, you can try that, maybe a longer style with it. far as the stache goes, if you shave it, suppose to grow back thicker or faster (this could be a myth). Its tough, my mom accepts it but she doesn't like to talk about it or look at my facial hair I have growing. Hopefully one day , they will get it and be cool with it.

It's better to be cleanshaven unless you can grow proper facial hair. Post puberty men don't have the fluffy wispy hair.

I think contacts and a military buzz would give you a real hard ass look.

anyway. you can see in my avatar what shaving will do to passing. it completely reveals the hairline, so i could never hope to pass as anything more than a "boy" if i try to present male. combing your hair back will do the same. well, you actually see a combination of the two in my pic...

but, i'm not trying to pass as male, so this haircut is great for me.
if i were trying to pass as male, i'd have the haircut that i had in the linked pic

Oh well, it might but I don't think it is really read as male in FtMs unless they are really quite far along in transition. Butch women tend to prefer this style.

You can do the sides razor and have some kind of scissors cut on the top (whatever you want). You have the type of head that would probably work for about anything.

I agree with GnomeKid.  I think a hairstyle like the one in your avatar would look good.  It might be read as butch, but you also might start passing.

FWIW, I think it's generally hard not to be read as butch when presenting as masculine pre-transition.  I have long hair worn like a guy and I'm read as butch.  I don't mind, though.  For me, it's better than being read as a feminine woman.

My favorite cut is the classic short sides and back with a little extra length up top. It looks good on almost every dude and my favorite thing about it is it's easy enough to do it myself, which is cool because I hate going to the barbers. Just take clippers, 1 on the sides/back and a 4 up top. The finished product:

Try looking up male hairstyles for oval face shape.

I noticed that your hairline is quite rounded.
Usually males have a more angular hairline and recedes on the sides and when you start testosterone, your hairline will most likely change too.

Since I'm Pre-T, I decided to touch up my hairline myself and make it more angular and it does make a difference :). Easy with the razor blade though.
