Title: surgeons who cover surgery as "gynecomastia" for insurance purposes?
Post by: jumpthenexttrain on September 07, 2014, 10:40:28 PM
Hi, I used to have an account on here under a different user name. I'm back, with a question. I recently got insurance for the first time in a long time. I was wondering if there are any US doctors who will cover top surgery as gynecomastia  for insurance purposes. I think I've seen it talked about before but it was so long ago. I have Blue Cross insurance.  Any info helps. I'm located in ithaca, NY but I'm interested in any info about any US doctors.  Thanks

Last year I went to NYC to accompany my friend for his surgery. His surgeon coded his procedure as gynecomastia and gender as male, but not for insurance purpose though because my friend paid out of pocket for everything. Even the nurses and residents did not realize that he was trans.
I do not know if he even takes insurance, but this surgeon and the hospital also charge much more than most top surgery prices. I can PM you the surgeon's name if you are interested.

Not sure that would work for a transman. Insurance would code that as a male only procedure and the transman as female.

My insurance has me listed as male, so I don't think it would pose an issue

Depends if you are legally male or not (esp what it says on your insurance).

My license says male. Birth certificate doesn't cuz I was born in a state that doesn't change it. But no one ever really sees my birth certificate

I went to Dr. Rockmore in Albany, NY and he codes the procedure as gynecomastia surgery. I'm including a pic of my informed consent packet, pictured below.

I should note that I opted to pay out of pocket (even though Rockmore takes insurance), I still have an F on all my documents, and I had a double bilateral mastectomy with free nipple grafts.

This.
I have heard good things about Rockmore  and he is so close!
