Title: TG Friendly Places in the South?
Post by: findingreason on September 18, 2014, 05:19:55 PM
I'm curious, as we all know the south can be a very hostile/unsupportive place for transgender people and the GLBT community in general. However, I have considered the idea of moving south in the future for multiple reasons. One of the biggest being climate, as I have a very difficult time coping with the northern winters (very low tolerance issues with cold air to the point of having difficulty breathing at times when it gets below 20 degrees, plus snow is just plain annoying stuff.  :icon_chainsaw: :D ). Other reason is I know there are some cities in the south that DO have growing economies.

This is all speculation and info gathering for now, as this would not happen for at least 5 years or so. But I am definitely curious to find out if there are places that are TG friendly in the south that I can adapt to reasonably well socially.

I know Ashville NC is trans friendly. It's also a tourist trap though. Ashville is a strange place for it's location. It's as if another dimension superimposed itself over this one in that one area. It's as far from the rest of NC as you can get politically. I have heard however that there are some anti-trans judges who try to stop name changes and gender marker changes though.

Yeah from what I've read Asheville, NC seems to be trans-friendly.  I think Atlanta would also be relatively LBGT-friendly.  It has also been said that places along the coastline tend to be more liberal since younger people tend to live there so I would think those places would be more open-minded.  Miami and Houston also comes to mind.

In my experience Atlanta is very trans friendly, so is much of Florida.

Atlanta is really the only town that is friendly. Do not ever go to Birmingham, Alabama or Mobile, Alabama. Pensacola, Florida is nice. New Orleans has too much crime. Tampa is a nice area. Nashville Tenn is OK, friendly.

Well they really don't discriminate when it comes to crime. Everybody is fair game when the sun goes down. Who or however you define yourself. You're fair game. Atlanta? I have seen my fair share of crime. Especially at the Petro tuck stop. I would have to say Tampa Fl. Spent a few night there. :embarrassed Nashville is friendly because of the music and that wholesomeness. ::) If country music fans only knew. But spent a few nights there too. And again... :embarrassed: Pensacola though MMM, MMM. MMM. >:-) That's all I'm gonna' say. :o

Thank you everyone for your input! :) This is definitely helpful, I am going to explore into these places more into the future to learn which may be a good fit for me in about 5-10 years.

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly is so terrible about Birmingham and Mobile? Aside from the obvious being in the Deep South. I still have family down there, so if there's something odious, it'd behoove me know about it, in case I ever visit.

Also, how is Huntsville?

Huntsville is very progressive. It seems others know all these towns better than me so ask them. I was trying to be nice & give my opinion after 20 years down this way. Go ahead & mention transexual in B'Ham, Alabama. You might as well have the plague in that town.

Pensacola was very nice to me. I just called the main hospital group & told them I was a sincere MtF person that needed a new doc for HRT. They went all out to find me a friendly physician. He was very pleasant & gave me a scrib for HRT within 10-15 minutes after we talked. I never had any other town come close to being this nice to me. And while there I found & dated & some very nice men. It was a beautiful little town on the coast. If I had done that in B'ham, Alabama they would have tried to send me to a lepar colony.
