Title: When did infertility begin after HRT?
Post by: NoelleTh88 on September 24, 2014, 09:22:48 PM
It's so far been 6 days that I've started hormones, and I can still ejaculate, but I really want to freeze some of my sperm before chemical castration begins; so when did infertility start for you all. Will a fertility clinic even allow me to freeze some.

Mine started at about 4 to 5 weeks into HRT.  :)
Under 18 could be a problem without parental consent and it is very expensive. Also they cannot be kept indefinitely.

Consent and money isn't really an issue right now, but how long can they be kept?

Usually 12 years or less. See this.

Thank you so much! We'll let's just hope I meet someone by 28, lol, but hopefully medical science will advance and somehow increase the life span. I guess I'll freeze some just in case.

I think it was within a month. I can't remember exactly unfortunately 7 weeks after starting HRT I ended up inpatient thanks to my wonderful soon to be ex-wife. By time I was out it was definitely blanks and I have no regrets. I have my one amazing son and that's all I can ask for.

I have no way of knowing, as I didn't get tested or anything, but I was definitely infertile by the time I had GRS at 2.5 years on HRT.

I was about 3 weeks in on a dose that is half of what I take now. If you want to bank sperm do IT NOW! I didn't freeze any sperm and I don't regret that decision because for me if I can't carry a child then I was never meant to have one.

I'm only 18 days in (wow time flies!) and pretty much dried up already. Any ejaculate is pretty much clear.

You're not permanently infertile for a while though and if you just started HRT you can stop for 1-2 weeks to regain most of your functionality according to my doctor. It's not until you get to the 6+ months to a year that you have to worry about irreversible infertility.

If I were in your position, I'd stop the HRT immediately and get some sperm frozen before resuming it. You've been on hormones for such a short time that it probably hasn't had any adverse effect on your sperm production as yet, but rest assured, it soon will! Once your sperm production has been shut down it can take quite a long time to get it restarted, since apart from anything else, it takes about 4 months for sperm cells to fully mature from the time they're produced. On top of that you've got to allow time for your testicles to recover from an atrophied state, so you could be looking at a long time off hormones (perhaps as much as a year) if you leave it until you've been on HRT for a while.

Yeah... if you care about freezing sperm, you do NOT want to be on HRT. When I went on HRT, my ejaculate was already getting thinner by the end of week 1, it had changed completely from cloudy white to a transparent yellow liquid after about 3.5 weeks, and by the 6 month mark nothing at all was coming out anymore.

Seriously. Don't mess around with HRT at all if you want to freeze sperm. Get off HRT, wait few weeks for your body to recover, then freeze the sperm, then get back on it.

Thanks, I stopped taking them yesterday and I should be freezing them by Monday.

Um, you might want to wait a few days and let things get back to normal before you spend the money. Even at only 6 days on HRT they must have been slightly compromised.  :)

How long do you think I should wait?
