Title: A trans person on telly not talking about trans issues? Nice!
Post by: Ms Grace on September 29, 2014, 03:54:19 PM
I was watching a sci fi doco on telly last night and one of the experts they interviewed was a woman sci fi author. I did wonder almost straight away if she was trans, she looked great but there were a couple of things that made me wonder so I checked Wikipedia... and sure enough she was m2f trans. On one hand I was a little disappointed that I was able to read someone who looked very passable so quickly (ie what does that say about my own "passability"?), on the other hand I thought it was great she was there in her own right as a sci fi author not as the token trans sci fi author - she wasn't identified as trans during the program (that I saw, anyway). I suppose some might think she should have used the opportunity to be out and proud but the fact she was there as herself talking about her passion made me pretty darn proud for her. :)

What?  Are you implying that at the end of the day that we're just regular people? *gasp*

Grace, you probably read her because you know what to look for, and you have trans issues at the forefront of your thinking.  Most people don't.  I'd imagine that 98% of cis people wouldn't pick up on it.

Ms. Grace, "a woman sci-fi author," that is, period.

Maybe the show didn't know & that is where it stays for the public too. She is a woman.

How Happy that can be for all of us!
