Title: Finasteride
Post by: Bea_Slavsky on October 04, 2014, 09:53:13 PM
Dear

Early in 2014 I have decided to start a hair loss treatment as a first step to consider a transition.
So after a talk with my doctor I started with finasteride.
Today, after six months is clear that my hear is stronger, what was my objective. My plain was to start my HRT in January 2015.
But some side effects happened and I had to open my plans to the doctor before I want. To see if the treatment could not be dangerous to me.

Basically I lost a lot of my sexual desire (all of that?). The other side effect is that my nipples are very sensitive and there is even a kind of "lump" on the left nipple. Also there are already comments about my growing breasts.

All these things are comming too long before I was plaining to live and explain about.

Becouse that I'm afraid about start the HRT. My doctor ordered lot's of tests :-\.

It could be good or not. So I'd like to hear feedback's about the side effects of finasteride and if my reactions are too strange.

Just to say...In meantime I was becoming increasingly certain of what I want to do. I'm truly happy withy those effects, mainly because low libido balanced my life ^-^.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Cheers,
Bea.

I know of people on Finasteride who are also on estrogen, doesn't seem to be a problem for them. What exactly is your concern?

Hi Bea,
I began HRT 26 months ago and added Finisteride six months later.  It took almost a year, but it made a big difference in the density of my hair.  I can't comment much of the feminization that you've experienced because that was kind of the whole point for me . ;)  Still depending on the dose it can block DHT and also lower free testosterone.  That might be the what you have experienced,  it kind of sounds like it.  Your doctor will figure it out, but I hope it is a happy coincidence for you.

Fair winds,
Julie

Bea,
Decreased sexual desire is an extremely common side affect of Finasteride.

Dears I'm proud to have your attention. It means... I'm not allone.

Grace. I'm just affraid if the HRT, especially the testosterone blockers, could not be too strong for me, considering finasteride is a weak anti-androgen. I have not yet started to take strogen...
I imagine that the process will have other side effects, that do not only involves the -wonderful- feminization side.
I know the doctor is the best one to say anything concern to the treatment but it would be very good to have feedbacks those who have experienced it.

I'm pretty sure to continue a process I've planed for years. It would be very sad if I knew that the medicines are contraindicated for me.

I'm really happy I've discovered this forum whith a serious support.

About the "years" off planyng I would to say abbout my Story but may have a more appropriate topic to share it...

Happy to hear from you. Cheers :)

Common side effect of Finasteride is erectile dysfunction, loss of sex drive, gynecomastia (development of breast tissue), basically benefits for us on HRT. This is why it's commonly prescribed with HRT. I started Finasteride about 4 months prior to HRT, and for me, the only side effect was a more watery ejaculation. Of course now, nearly 10 months on HRT, my orgasms are completely dry now (but feel freak'n awesome.)

Finasteride blocks DHT, the strongest component of testosterone. DHT is mostly responsible for hair loss. In low doses the side effects are usually mild to non-existent, but at hight doses (common for treating enlarges prostate) it almost always has those side effects. I was taking the minimal dosage of Finasteride till about July when my HRT doctor upped it to the prostate shrinking dosage. (I can't give specific doses on the forum.) Anyway, my hair has thickined up and improved quite a bit. My crown filled in completely and my temples have made huge improvement. My temple still aren't feminine enough to pull off some hairstyles, my with my hair parted in the middle it's more of a widows peak and my temples are covered nicely. Here is a before and after for me:

September 2014 (started Finasteride August 2013, HRT - December 2013)

Tell your doctor that you plan on HRT, and that should make him worry a little less about the side effects you are experiencing. Every one of them is only going to benefit you for HRT.

Wow Sydney_NYC that's made quite a difference, your hairs looking great. Did you find the growth rate increase on the Finasteride?

I was on spiro for 9mos then added estradiol and finestride at the same time in April 2014. My hair has been thinning for years so my endo added the finestride. Since starting it, my hair is starting to comeback. I have all the feminizing of my body going on but don't know how much is due to finestride since I'm on spirt and estradiol. But here are my results so far:

Hair is thickening and stopped receding
Tender nipples and breast growth so I'm an A cup already
Skin is super soft
Body hair slowed. Facial hair no change :(
Body fat is changing, my stomach is flatter and thighs are bigger
I'm calmer and happier than ever in my entire life
Sex is totally different. My wife says I react just like her
Just a little clear fluid at orgasm.  But my ENTIRE body orgasms now!  It's amazing!

Hope this helps

Hugs

Kay

Thank you!! I also take Biotin each morning and that, combined with HRT, and Finasteride has made a huge different. I grow a little more than 1/2 and inch a month of hair. I started growing my hair out in September 2012 (the was my last hair cut till June 2014 when I had my hair reshaped and layered a little.) Finasteride definitely helped. My hairstylist noticed a difference between June and August of this year with my hair. She said it's a lot thicker in the front.

Thank you. Yes, my crown came back fully and my temples moved down about 3/4 of and inch and small hairs are coming in. You can see the progression a little more here in my Flickr album (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54438591@N06/). I'm still not comfortable enough with my hairline to part it on the side, but it's is so much better than before. I am comfortable enough to pull it back into a high or low pony tail, but I use pins to position my hair to hide my temples and that works well for me. Last week I did this as I was helping move a client's office with moving his servers and network equipment. The mover's saw me completely as a cis-woman and didn't have any issues even with my hair pulled back that way.

I'm on dutasteride, spiro, estradiol, and progesterone and after a month have had a pretty noticeable results. I've been lucky to never have suffered from MPB but my hair did thin from bariatric surgery (a common side effect). The amount of stray hairs in my brush seem to have decreased in the month since I started HRT.
