Title: hips or pelvis?
Post by: orangejuice on October 14, 2014, 01:41:58 PM
Hey, new on here, 25 years old and only recently considering the possibility that I might be able to do something other than ignore these feelings of wanting to be a girl. As a result been bombarded with a whole host of new questions and worries. One of which is obviously how I would look.

Sorry I'm sure this is a common type of question that will have been asked before...

A common thing you read about HRT is fat redistribution away from the stomach and on to the thighs and hips. Thing is I'm a little confused as to what people mean when they say hips? I have a very wide pelvis for a guy, but its also quite high, and I'm not sure that my hips are wide. If you were to feel the highest part of your pelvic bone at the side, there and and above is where I have a bit of fat. If that fat was to sort of drop down a bit lower and sit at the side of the pelvic bone, rather than the top and above it, then my wide pelvis could come in handy. However if what people mean when they say 'hips' is that highest point of the pelvic bone, then I'm afraid putting more weight on there would actually make me look even more like a guy. Either right now I have a more feminine frame than is usual with a male fat distribution, or I have masculine frame with a more female fat distribution.

Anyone who's been through HRT for a few years, what is your experience of fat changes in this area and where exactly does it sit on your body in relation to the highest point of the pelvis at the side?

Thanks

How fat distributes in the body (as any cis or trans woman discovers) is a bit of a genetic lottery. You might get some clues from mother, sisters, aunties, grandmothers, etc as to the likely end result from being on HRT. I also have wide hips for a male, after 16 months on HRT I find the fat is mostly on my upper thighs, which luckily gives me a bit of shape.

First of all, don't worry, if you're on HRT, your hips are going to look more feminine. Estrogen knows what it's doing. It's been making female bodies visually appealing to those who are attracted to it since forever. Trust me, it knows where to store fat in order to make hips look more feminine.

With that said, for me, "hips" mainly ended up being the area just a few inches below the corner bones of my pelvis, at the very top of the thighs. And if you look at pictures of your average woman, that's usually what makes their hips look wide, is the fat at the top of the thighs. There's usually really not much fat around the hip bones themselves.

Yep, when people talk about "hips" in terms of fashion or body measurements, they actually mean the very upper thigh, which is the thickest point on most women. (There might also be a bit of fat deposited around the pelvic bone, but the nice thing is that even in cis women the actual *pelvis* is only visible on the very skinniest women wearing very revealing clothing; the only hips/curves noticeable on most will be the thighs.)
