Title: Came out to my GP last week
Post by: Paige on October 19, 2014, 03:47:29 PM
Hi All,

Well after chickening out for quite some time, I finally came out to my family doctor last week.  He was very nice and supportive.  He admitted that he wasn't that experienced with transgender patients, he's has one FTM patient for over 30 years he said but that was it.  I found this quite odd, he has a very large practice and I thought he would have had at least one MTF patient over the years.

Anyway we talked a bit about low dose HRT.  I didn't ask him for it right now.  I just told him I was thinking of it.  He wasn't familiar with this and wants to read up on the subject.   I live in Ontario and getting into an endo can be quite hard apparently, so we are encouraged to talk to our family doctors about HRT.   CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) in Toronto actually have a letter to GP recommending this.  He said he would read it.

He also didn't put anything specific into his records as per my request.   He booked me for another appointment in January to discuss this more.  He said I could move the appointment up if I felt I needed to.  I think I need to talk to my therapist and wife a bit before I take the next step.

I particularly like the fact that he was very sympathetic to me when I told him about my bad experiences with psychiatrists in the past.

All in all, it went very well.   I always knew he was a very nice person, I shouldn't have been so afraid to approach him.

Paige :)
