Title: I Wore A Tie In The Public For The First Time!
Post by: King Malachite on October 31, 2014, 09:49:05 PM
Yeah....it was Halloween so I could get away with it, but still, I thought it was pretty cool, lol.  It was a cheap small kid's elastic tie that I just put around my polo shirt.  I had to work for a few hours so I figured why not?  Unfortunately, I was so busy at work with the lovely joy of having my period be on that I couldn't enjoy the experience like I really wanted to.  It was still nice to be able to wear one freely without it seeming too odd.  I kept looking down at it from time to time and thought how awesome it was to wear it.  Hopefully one day I can graduate to wearing a men's clip on tie in a business suit.

Just wanted to share.  :)

Cool!

If you're into wearing ties, but are worried about it seeming odd at work, would wearing one outside of work not be an option?

@blink It's possible, but I really don't go anywhere outside of work (mostly due to not having a driver's license, and a kid's tie on someone my size seems a little silly.

@Ricky Thanks!  I hope so too.  :)  It felt good to wear it and just consider it a "Halloween costume".  It made me wish Halloween was ever day.

Congrats Malachite, I should have saved all my ties for you friend, someone at GoodWill scored them. Glad you enjoyed the sensation though!

Yays! However......you don't graduate to a clip on tie. One graduates to the Double Windsor knot. You're a big guy, you'll wear a big knot well.  There's a good video on this page, stay with it through the slow beginning.   http://www.tie-a-tie.net/windsor.html

I love ties. I think between me and my husband we know about 15 different knots. Nothing quite like it in my opinion. Don't go to clip ons! At least for me, I love the whole process of putting them on.

@Shantel Thanks.  There should be a trans-based Goodwill where we can just swap out all of the clothes we don't need and let another trans person put them to good use!

@Devlyn and Ayden and Ricky  The process of tying a tie looks intimidating.  If I can be honest I had so much trouble putting the elastic one one (and when I got home I realized it still wasn't need) that upgrading to the non elastic/ non clip on tie seems nearly impossible, lol.

It's no worse than learning to tie your shoes. Really, it isn't, and it's a lot more satisfying.

I started with having my husband tie mine.

Go with what you feel comfortable with naturally, but really like just like the lady says; tying your shoes. I wasn't sold on learning until I looked at some of the more intricate knots. I started with a Winsdor and moved from there. It's really not too bad, it just takes practice.

Try a bow tie. I reckon men look really sexy wearing bow ties :embarrassed:

Haven't done a Windsor knot. I don't use a clip on of course (only places for those are boy's schools and secure facilities where someone might grab you by the tie). I do something called a four in hand, which may not be the most dressy knot but if I wear a tie in NM for anything I'm crazy overdressed already. :)

Good idea Cindy: I think I'd look good in one but I'd also be overdressed. Bolo ties are the thing here. (New Mexico)

Go to youtube and put in tying a tie. Someone can teach you. I know how and can do it without watching the video.

Oh and sounds good. I don't know why you can't wear one, there are girls who wear one so it's not strictly speaking male.

Most of the men here that wear bow ties are MD's that don't want their tie getting in the way or psudo-intellectual pinheads. Every time I see one I automatically know where they are coming from.

That's awesome!

Interesting hearing about the FTM experience of going out dressed appropriately.  Very similar, just flipped so to speak.  ;)

Wow! I know a lot of people who wear them that don't fit at all into your stereotype.

Mannn learning to tie a tie is simpler than you'd thing.  Wrap it around twice and pull it through!  Tying a bow-tie is a bit trickier though..

They must be different from the characters I'm referring to, but yeah that is painting with a pretty broad brush and I'll take the correction.

Nobody will really make an issue of you wearing a tie whether with a skirt or trousers. You occasionally see women do it with both casual and business wear. It is no longer a strictly menswear item.

Malachite, good on you to to feel the sense of completing the male fashion presentation wearing a tie. Devlyn providing a site that show various ways to tie knots should help. Cindy's idea of a bow tie has a classy touch if dressing for a formal night out wearing a jacket. I never learned to tie a bow tie, when I was young I had an elastic or clip on tie. The only knot I ever learned is the Windsor, once you got it down pat you won't forget. With clip on & elastic ties, if you get tired of having that top button around your neck on the shirt done up, you undo the button & then the clip on may not stay on & the elastic will show with a funny gap, so you have to take them off and lose the dress effect. With a knotted tie, undo the top button, you can & may want to loosen the tie a bit you haven't lost the dressy effect.

Lots of good comments by others here.

Jamie

Thanks ladies and gentlemen.  :)  The way  I see it, I need to get my use out of these elastic ties I have first.  I brought about 6-8 of them for crazy cheap on Ebay initially for home use.  Whenever I get the chance to go out around some pretty open-minded people, I will probably start to wear them more.  It would be pretty cool to "loosen my tie" though.   :D  I wouldn't mind trying a bow tie either as I think I'd look pretty decent in that.    From what I've seen online and heard from others, it doesn't seem like ties and polo go well so I'd like to get some dress shirts when I have the extra cash for it, and actually have places I can go to other than work.

Here in Japan during the summer months it's common to see men in ties with short-sleeved button-ups.

I totally agree with practicing on cheap ties while you are learning. Experimentation with ties is fun, frustrating and really empowering. I try to tie different knots while my husband is gone and I get that rush of excitement when I get the knot right. I personally think that outside from a nice cardigan a man in a tie is hella stylish.

If it makes you feel good, keep trying friend. Once you get the basic pratt knot and half Windsor, try the full Windsor and then branch out. My personal favorite is the trinity.

Hey! That's fantastic news for your tie. I'm something of a necktie otaku, so, if you're into it, I highly recommend Alex Krasny's channel on youtube. He's got a bunch of great necktie knots, most of which are a lot of fun to experiment with. If you find that you're into ties, I recommend checking local 2nd hand stores or ebay for a large supply. I once got 20 silk ties for $10 on ebay, so it's well worth it. Have fun! Remember, that's what it's all about :)

PS: I'm a husband of an ftm, and I really like how ties make me feel, and it's been a wonderful thing to share with my husband :)

Had my mum tie my tie when I first got it, my girlfriend taught me how to tie it. Now I have a little shirt, tie, and waistcoat combo to wear on special occasions :D Honestly, dont worry about wearing a tie, whether you're read as male or female, I don't think I pass but I rock the tie anyway. Tying it is definitely a confidence booster, too.
