Title: NYT Editorial Board: Private Manning's Missing Medical Care

New York Times
November 8, 2014

The NYT does not allow quoting of their editorials, so here is the link to their pro-trans health care opinion: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/09/opinion/sunday/private-mannings-missing-medical-care.html?_r=0 (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/09/opinion/sunday/private-mannings-missing-medical-care.html?_r=0)

I'm troubled that the president whom I supported in two elections has seen fit to allow this. He is Secretary Hagel's boss and could easily fix this.

It's nice to see the Times get something right, for once. Pvt. Manning's (lack of) treatment is an outrage and a violation of her human rights.

Would they deny insulin to a diabetic inmate?

The NYT does not allow quoting of their editorials,
What's the legal basis for their not allowing quoting even small bits of an editorial?

It's pretty clear that it would be illegal to copy the entire editorial or even a substantial part of it into a Susan's post (unless you have explicit permission), but I believe the "fair use" exception to copyright allows people to use small excerpts from a work for discussion purposes without the copyright holder's permission.

BTW, I believe this is why Susans only allows short excerpts of the linked articles in its news posts -- to avoid copyright infringement.

I also believe that a summary of the entire editorial would always be legal, since copyright covers expression, not content.

Asche: It's not so much that they have a policy saying you can't, it's they program their website to make it difficult to select text in certain browsers.  It could have been easy to get around, but since it was an opinion piece it wasn't like there was a good paragraph that summarizes the piece like an inverted pyramid news story has, I just decided there was no point in putting the effort in getting a selection from it.  I'm sorry, I should have made it clear that it stemmed from my laziness rather than a policy they have.
