Title: Name change
Post by: Lostkitten on November 10, 2014, 10:19:55 AM
Alrightyy so my psychologist told me a while ago I could change my gender and name in the documents, not even sure how you say it in English but well, to change my name and gender officially. Which I want to do before or when I start with hormones, Although I already live 'full-time' I still often talk about myself with he and call my old name. Power of the habit but also because I have to make the switch myself.

My picture is up anyway so I don't feel bad about saying my name (not last name no worries D:). I want a feminine version of my own name just because, well, I like to stay close to myself or so.

Now I am called Tristan. My mother mentioned Tristana which I think does not even exist as a name o.o (beside League of Legends x_x). My father and stepmom mentioned Trish, which I like but I just like to have a longer name because Trish if you say it out loud (in Dutch) doesn't sounds feminine, just like Tris. I seen the name Trista which I like, but some mentioned it is too close to my name now and it will get people to still say my old name.. which I think is just ignorant, but that aside.

What do you think if you see my photo? Might be a silly way but I like to hear opinions ^^.

If you're ready, changing name soon may help a lot. As you said we need to get used to that new name and starting soon is easier.
If you have options to change your gender and are ready go for it :). I had so many problem with my cards and passport not matching my gender, I was refused on plane once at start because of this (I know have legal paper to proof that everything is fine).

Well the name is totally up to you but tristana might not fit the picture I see on avatar, at least it's an original name. If you have some close friends maybe you may ask them to call you by a name for a week, that is probably the best to find a name that won't bother you on long term.

What country are you from? We can suggest you a bunchs of name but if they don't fit your environment they will always sound weird to you.

I am from the Netherlands but it really feels for me it is either Trish, Trista or Tristana and the last one I doubt. I do like it I just think it stands out too much for it to be taken seriously.

How does one go about name changing? I just realized that I'm officially 18 so I can finally do it regardless of my parent's consent! Where do I start though? I also wonder if I even need to? My name is Adrian & I know it's a semi-androgynous name but it's still annoying because when I call into jobs to check on applications they'll be like "Adrianna? Adrianne?" & they sound slightly confused when I say "No, it's Adrian". It's just annoying.

Edit - Prices would be nice too! Does it vary state to state? I live in California if that helps.

Trish is good. It depends if you want to remain close to your original name or branch out. Ultimately only you know. Sometimes asking your parents if they'd picked out female names helps.
