Title: Place to buy clothes?
Post by: Matthew on November 10, 2014, 04:10:48 PM
I'm sure I'm not the only transguy who has this problem, but finding clothes that fit is near impossible for me. Whether it's too tight on hips or butt or too big on the arms, I'll spend hours trying to find one decent shirt. I was just wondering if there's any shops that are good for different cuts of clothes, and the names of different cuts that work better for someone who needs to hide chest, hips ect.

Thanks

-Matt

I get most of my clothes from Value Village. I found that the jeans that are in the higher price range (which at VV means around 12 bucks) tend to fit well even though I have wide hips. Still no luck with dress pants though.

I struggle with this as well. I have to get the weirdest sizes in pants because I'm short, but my thighs are huge. I would highly recommend going to a thrift store for pants. It's weird, but I've found that I tend to fit better in pants that are a bit worn in.

Not sure whereabouts in your transition you are, but I also would recommend not investing too much in your wardrobe until/if you're going to start T. With all the potential body changes, you my find that everything fits when you buy it but doesn't in a few weeks.

I shop at jcpenney, more because I have access to a relative's store card than anything else. But their young men's section has a pretty decent selection of shirts for shorter guys/shorter arms.

Pants... now therein lies the eternal struggle...

For upper body, I often shop at H&M for formal wear, they have good slim cuts that fit nicely around my narrower shoulders and thin arms.
Tshirts are difficult, but I find thick, cotton shirts are best for hiding curves once in a while.
I tend to wear low rise bootleg or slim cut jeans (I had thin legs pre-T). Low rise as in it sits on your hips, not above. For me, I just find the smallest ones that I can fit my hips into, they tighten up the wide hips a bit and help disguise the butt. Make sure the legs aren't too fitting, or the shape might give you away. I like to shop at Bluenotes for my jeans, khakis and casual shirts, since they're cheap and have sizes down to XS.
However, dress pants for me have proven practically impossible to look completely masculine in, so beware.

Target, Urban Outfitters, American Apparel.... unfortunately it seems like most places I find fitted clothing are the ones with the higher prices.

If you've got the cash, I've gotta rep this Japanese brand, Uniqlo. I picked up some clothes when I was visiting Philly, and it was kind of a hallelujah moment for me. I'm 5ft 5in, about 125 lbs, and quite "hip-y," and I can easily shop in their men's section, both in shirts and in pants. God bless the XS.

Hi Matthew

I'm not sure where in the world you live but if it's in the UK then I shop in either the boys dept of Next or Debenhams.  Both have really decent stuff and I find their 13/14 yr old stuff fits me perfect.  I'm 5.2 and about 8 stone but sadly with womanly thighs :(
