Title: Facebook name drama... my solution
Post by: pianoforte on November 12, 2014, 04:45:21 AM
So I changed my name on Facebook to my gender-neutral nickname several months back, but their algorithms don't allow single-letter names or initials unless a middle name is also published.

Unfortunately, this led to tons of people (mostly folks in groups or friends-of-friends who I didn't know) referring to me by the middle name I listed, which is a clearly gendered name that is part of my birthname, that I do not like to be called.

So I tried to take out the middle name portion again tonight, and won't take no for an answer. I went to the page to get assistance with a name change, and in the file upload section where they allow you to submit a scan of your ID, I put in the following jpeg image (names removed since this is a public forum):

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi10.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa110%2Fsicktwistedsmile%2Fthisiswhoiam-redacted.jpg&hash=43341cc2252b1441f6756603f9fce04df325733d)

...It may not have any effect whatsoever, but it made me feel better.

Anyone else done anything like this? Or basically tried to educate them on trans issues at all?

PS. Pardon the mild swear word in the image - would have blocked that out too if I had noticed it. Or maybe not included it. I have some difficult feelings when it comes to family, I guess. Sorry about that.

Good luck.. You may be successful.?
We run a large fan page for trans model who recently changed her name, and initially Fb would not allow name changes without documented proof..? But just a week ago they altered the policy and made name changes easier, at least for fan pages.. Not sure if same is true for personal pages.?

Maybe you can create a new profile?

I did that when I came out on facebook, but that was after most of my friends knew I was trans.

Possible temporary solution....

Use the phonetic spelling of the letter you are using?

A = Ayh
B = Bee
C = Cee

and so on. I know it will appear a little odd, but it would eliminate the need to go by your middle name!
