The Song From Moulin Rouge (Where Is Your Heart) - Percy Faith & Orchestra
1953
Wow, it actually went back THAT far...
Erin
Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel
I know the artist, but not the song. Now I'm going to have to listen to it.
One Day At A Time - Lena Martell
Kinda apt, lol.
I'm only human, I'm just a woman.
Help me believe in what I could be
And all that I am.
Show me the stairway, I have to climb.
Lord for my sake, teach me to take
One day at a time.
Chorus:
One day at a time sweet Jesus
That's all I'm asking from you.
Just give me the strength
To do everyday what I have to do.
Yesterday's gone sweet Jesus
And tomorrow may never be mine.
Lord help me today, show me the way
One day at a time.
Do you remember, when you walked among men?
Well Jesus you know if you're looking below
It's worse now, than then.
Cheating and stealing, violence and crime
So for my sake, teach me to take
One day at a time.
Flag Day (June 14th, 1992)

Walk Like An Egyptian - The Bangles
:P
Eternal Flame by The Bangles is probably my all time favourite song. I remember Walk Like An Egyptian though, I couldn't help dancing to it every time I heard it, lol.

Awww, you must have been so adorable. :)
I don't remember Eternal Flame off the top of my head. I'll have to listen to it when I'm on better internet.
Madonna - This Used To Be My Playground (August 5th of '92)
I had never even heard the song until now. I had to look it up on YouTube.
It was still No.1 on March 23,1954

Aus: I got you - Split Enz
UK: Theme from M*A*S*H
Can: Call Me - Blondie
US: Funky Town - Lipps inc
I will still watch M*A*S*H repeats when I can (and occasionally sing the chorus badly :P to the tune). The other three I listen to and have in my cd collection. Sometimes I feel like I'm stuck in the 80's
17 days before I was born and it became number 1:

The Bangles-Enteral Flame I believe. No shame.
Mike and the Mechanics - The Living Years
Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door
I know that I'm a prisoner
To all my father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thought
Stilted conversations
I'm afraid that's all we've got
You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement in this present tense
We all talk a different language, talking in defense
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye
So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
It's the bitterness that lasts
So don't yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective on a different day
And if you don't give up, and don't give in, you may just be okay
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye
I wasn't there that morning
When my Father passed away
I didn't get to tell him
All the things I had to say
I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I'm sure I heard his echo
In my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye

"You Belong to Me" by Jo Stafford. Nov. 3. 1952. It was on the charts for 20 months in the US since August of that year. She also sang for the troops at USO shows during WWII.

First song I knew all the words too. I was totally obsessed with that song. I remember one time I didn't want to go to my grandmothers because I didn't want to miss it on MTV. Apparently I had no conception as to the existence of the radio. Strange song for a 6-7 year old to be obsessed with regardless.
Telstar - The Tornadoes.
According to wikipedia:
"The record was named after the Telstar communications satellite, which was launched into orbit on 10 July 1962.". It seems quaint that such an event was so exciting that someone wrote a song about it.

Rock Around the Clock - Bill Haley and the Comets (God I now feel old)
Amapola by Jimmy Dorsey's Big Band. I like him & have recorded this song off radio & many more songs. Also around the My fav Big Band, Glenn Miller & Chattanooga Choo Choo. May 11 1941. My Dad introduced me to the Big Band music.
@Eva Marie, is right about Telstar which I remember. I have always been interested in space travel & Astronomy.
@traci_k, actually listening to Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley & the Comets & 50's rock makes me feel young again. That song & In The Mood by Glenn Miller are ageless & stand the test of time. If you ever hear them played in place to dance people will dance.

I am going to cheat. I should have been this song, just as I am was supposed to be woman. That also didn't pan out. ;)
The Sound Of Silence.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zLfCnGVeL4
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

November 27th, 1991..hmm...Set Adrift On Memory Bliss - PM Dawn...
I don't even know who they are :-\ (looked it up, they sound alright. Not my poison though.)
I'll go with...The Unforgiven by Metallica instead.

Variously:
Don't throw your love away - The Searchers (UK)
Hello dolly - Louis Armstrong (USA)
Can't buy me love - The Beatles (AUS)
And I'd always previously read that my UK No. 1 was "world without love" by Peter, Paul & Mary.
There's a lot of love there, one way or another!!?
