Title: What are you wearing for Thanksgiving/the Holidays?
Post by: Gothic Dandy on November 14, 2014, 02:36:54 PM
I'm trying to figure out what I should wear to all the upcoming family parties and could use some fashion inspiration. So I was just wondering, what are you wearing? Guys and transmasculine types will be especially helpful to me, but I wanted to be inclusive of everyone so that everyone could share if they desired :)

So far I've got two Thanksgivings, two Christmasses, an annual baking party, and this year a wedding. I'm not out to either family, but my inlaws are openly transphobic. The baking party is with my friends and I already figured out my outfit. It will be ultra-femme just to see how I like it. I'm thinking of wearing something suit-like to the wedding. I guess it's just Turkey Day and Xmas that I'm stumped on.

Added: I would like to clarify to everyone that when I say "the holidays" I literally mean ALL THE HOLIDAYS. I'm not one of those jerks who says "holidays" and means "Christmas." I don't even celebrate Christmas personally, I just go to family parties because they still do. Thanksgiving is the one that is coming up for me first, so that's why I specified it. Alright, disclaimer over, carry on.

Under the circumstances, I will be sporting out my feminine blouse, mini jacket and dress pants. Most likely going to be silent the entire dinner.
It's more of a matter of getting the money to buy a suit, tie and collared shirt with pants. My last Thanksgiving with old female clothes.

You just reminded me I have a casual feminine jacket...I guess my plan worked.

Money is a bit of an issue for me too. I can't afford a shopping spree just for fancy holiday clothes. I'm hoping to make do with what I have in my closet and buy as little as possible, maybe one new outfit at most.

No thanksgiving here, but xmas day is pretty big at mums each year. what will I wear?

No idea, you see I live in Melbourne, where we get 4 seasons in 1 day, so what I wear will not be right for the day at some stage and I'll be too hot, too cold, wet, sweaty, well you get it.

My family is pretty informal when it comes to social events, and so are my friends, so I won't, alas, be wearing the perfectly-fitting, madly handsome Harris tweed jacket I found at the thrift shop a few weeks ago.

I paid $8.99 for it. You can find great stuff this way if you're patient.

I wasn't even aware people got dressed up for holidays. I've never worn anything special for them, nor has anyone I've known. I'll just be wearing whatever I happen to pull out of the closet those days.

I wish I looked sufficiently feminine enough and had the means to dress in women's clothes, makeup and all that on those days. I'd love to see the looks on my family's faces. Most of them don't know I'm trans, since the only time I see them are the holiday gatherings. And since they all come to my house to eat, they best not be giving me any lip about it. ;)

I do actually plan on coming out to them that way. :D

Oh man, I'm angsting over christmas eve so much because I don't know what to wear. I'm not out to my family and probably won't be until then, but the thought of wearing feminine stuff makes me cringe. Worse than cringe :(. Yeah... any ideas much appreciated :).

We're going to a 5 star restaurant near Broadway for Thanksgiving so fancy is mandatory.

I don't dress up at all. There are some people in my family that wear nicer clothes, but they are a minority among the group. I will probably be wearing jeans and a sweater and a permanent frown, as I'm not really crazy about group gatherings in general and I'm sure most of my family won't use my name or male pronouns.

I never really dress up for Thanksgiving since it's pretty uneventful but I do dress up for the family Christmas party. Usually I don't plan out what to wear, I just put on whatever is hanging in my closet and looks good, but my girlfriend helped me pick out a nice men's Alfani sweater and some men's black pants from Macy's not too long ago so I'll probably be wearing that along with my good old leather jacket. I just wish I had some men's dress shoes to go with the stuff I wear when I dress up since I always have to wear the women's ones that I hate. I would like to wear a button down under my sweater but I'll probably just keep it androgynous and won't.

Something cute that shows off my recent additions.  Maybe leopard print?

Finally actually ordered my first real binder today, so once I've got that I'll be able to start actually shopping for shirts and such. Don't have family time until January and that's over in Florida. A little aprehensive about that - so far I've been able to hide under layers of winter clothes, and gonna have to figure out warmer-weather clothes (and pool/beachwear) for that. Not least is going to be seeing if I can take that step to wearing shorts out in public without shaving my legs for the first time in my life...

That's pretty much how family gatherings are for me, too. I'm just there to contribute to the food supply and clean up afterwards. Otherwise I'm just sort of standing around waiting for it to be over and hoping no one talks to me. Which they usually don't, since I'm so uninteresting. At least in their opinion. I can't say I have a whole lot in common with most of my family.

I come from a bunch of simple country people so Levi jeans are considered formal, and in Alaska where i lived for years, formal means you comb your hair and wear clean carharts!

Since I'm out of country I don't have to worry about family gatherings. But for the few events I have to go to here  I will wear a cardigan and slacks. A tie if I feel fancy and get dressed well before I leave.  Simple is usually best in my family

Perfect! That's my family, too. Forgot I meant to post pictures as the important days passed...

Well, on Thanksgiving I...honestly forgot what I wore. But it wasn't much different from my everyday wear since I couldn't think of anything in time, which was kind of depressing.

On Second Thanksgiving (with the inlaws), I wore men's black jeans with zippers on the legs, a black women's dress shirt (with a little bit of character, not very formal), and a pinstripe tie, also a women's item. I was going for a somewhat rivethead/punk look, but my  husband just thought my top half didn't match the bottom half. Otherwise it was pretty androgynous, I'd say, and nobody batted an eye. However, my openly transphobic mother in law was absent, so who knows what she would have said. I was sort of looking forward to her reaction. Oh well.

I wore a dress. But then again I was home with just the wife and kids.

I think I was wearing a t-shirt and blue jeans. I don't really remember I only stayed about 10 minutes then went home. (Couldn't stand the family. ;P) I didn't get anything to eat so I ate chicken enchiladas (2 to be exact.) oddly I can remember what I eat but much less what I wear. :3 lol
