I was driving home from doing my groceries and a police car was behind me for a while and then it's lights went on. Oh great, I have one demerit point left before facing a 3 month disqualification.
The policeman came to my door, I rolled down the window and he says 'Sorry for stopping you Miss, I was just wondering what sort of a lady would be driving such a car with such a plate' Or something like that. I was a little confabulated as he was rather cute.
He was starting the night shift so we are meeting for breakfast tomorrow :laugh:

If there are any police officers (or other gun-carrying "peace officers", as we call them in the USA) here in this forum, please keep in mind that for many of us civilians, what is uppermost in our minds when we encounter you is how much power you have over us. When you turn on your flashing lights, or knock on our door, or stop us on the street or in the subway, for all we know, we are on our way into the trial-by-ordeal which here in the USA is euphemistically called the "justice system." We're also very, very conscious that if we say or do anything that makes you nervous (and it doesn't matter whether we have any way of knowing that it would make you nervous), we may get shot. (cf. Amadou Diallo.)
You may know you have no intent to coerce someone, or to put them in jail, or worse, but the person you stop has no way of knowing that. (Cf. Schroedinger's rapist.)

In Australia the duty of the Police is to protect the public . Yes there are renegades, but to be honest very few. I have 8 dermit points, all my fault. Being stopped by the Police is not an occasion for fear here. I will not be assaulted or arrested for something I have not done. I will not be placed into a cell of men if I am. We have worked hard on that.
How come? Well, I and overs have campaigned, wrote the letters, petitioned the commissar, no one gives you anything unless you fight for it.

I am from the USA and the police aren't that bothersome, at least where I live... I've had them stop and help before, if broken down, tire flat.... However, I am from small town rural America where every one pretty much knows everyone. In the cities and heavily populated areas, may be different, I am not sure.

Haha. None of my traffic stops were ever like that. Women hated that I didn't flirt with them because it usually meant a ticket!
Cindy, that's a cute story and it's good to hear that cute things like that still happen. In my part of the US, if a cop had done something like that, he (or she) would be instantly fired for abuse of authority, so my chances of ever having my day brightened by a friendly, nice cop are slim to none. (Sadly, we're rapidly moving towards seeing cops as malevolent agents of the government rather than friendly, trusted and helpful members of our own communities.)

Somewhat jaded, but I get you here and I am very distrustful of them also for a lot of good reasons. Many seem to be drawn to that line of work because they like the idea of controlling others, of legally being able to use force and to bully on others and get away with it. Some are damned fine people too. But here, "To protect and serve" means to back up the local politicians and power base and
citizens have no special right to police protections. Departments have been sued by private citizens who claim police failed to appear when they were being raped or beaten and called for help and the police abrogated their responsibilities to the public, and in every case those suits were lost citing the above.
i have a whole lot of trust in norwegian police.
particularly the local officers, i know all of them. it's impossible not to.
one had a kid in my grade school, another has a kid in my daughter's school.
great people, but all happily married...

As to LEOs being loose cannons, it really depends on where one is, and what shade your skin is.

Personally, I find it strange and ODD that a police office pulls you over, then comes up with the pick up line regarding your plate. Why is this odd?
1. How is it he saw you to begin with?
2. Does he simply not care who he says that line too and that any woman would do? Heck, how does he know it was a woman driving the car to begin with?
3. He used his authority to pull someone over when nothing was wrong and then proceeded to hit on someone, even though he never saw said person.
Be VERY CAREFUL Cindy. Be very careful.

That is exactly what is happening in my country. Police is just heavily dependent on just cameras in the street (closed-circuit television), and I seldom see any police officer in the street. They just regularly appear in the school areas while students are going to school in the morning or returning home in the afternoon. There are numerous traffic violations everyday, but very few are caught by police. I once submitted a civil appeal regarding illegal parking near my home. They replied that they can not control or punish it, because too many are violating. Understandably, every police officers are too busy processing their own administrative paper works in their offices.
And, at night, some crazy young men drive at 300 km/h (or 190 miles per hour) in some highways. The only thing police tried was to install another camera in the highway. Nobody is willing to do their duty at mid-night.
If a police officer fires his gun, I am sure he will be reprimanded or even can go to jail whatever the reason is. Here civilian gun possession is not allowed, and that would explain the differences from the U.S.

Well I had a very nice Breakfast with him, lovely guy.
I did sort of recognise him and when we talked it came out. He had breathalysed me some months before at a random station. My car is sort of shall we say - recognisable.
He remembered me and my car and when he saw me decided to take the risk of saying Hello. He had seen me on television and thought he would take a chance that I may recognise him.
I did and I remembered being breathalysed by him as we had cracked a few jokes and he was very nice to me at the time.
We had a fun breakfast, lots of talk, no pressure, I gave him my phone number, I felt safe and very comfortable.
He is divorced and was spending the rest of the day with his kids.
I'm sort of feeling rather nice.
And yes Devlyn I am sort of wondering what he looks like out of uniform >:-)
