Title: How meeting with parents and principal went
Post by: LatrellHK on November 21, 2014, 06:02:13 PM
Well on Thursday I met with my principal, dean, counselor, mom, and granma about me being trans and the school and harassment I've been receiving. We talked about it and she said she openly supports me being transgender, is fine with it, but I can't use the mens restroom since everyone knows me as a female and it'll probably cause a few more issues. But afterschool, like in the freshman areas particularly, we'll talk more. For now, womens bathroom and unisex after school. We talked about getting me a more private area to change as well  but that idea scares me a bit. I like changing with my friends especially and seeing me with girls helps, but safety first! We discussed obvious issues when track season hits and away meets happen. We agreed that in those situations, I'll be expected to use the mens room bc nobody knows me there and the girls will hopefully understand why. She said she'll begin calling me Chris, as well as the dean, the teachers all talked to my counselor and were told to go to her if confused. If even more they could come to me. I explained how open I was and how friends of mines are now referring to me as Chris and using male pronouns, which is a huge plus. We talked a bit more but basically: girls during day, unisex and somewhere else during after school nights, mens at away meets. She said if I were to start testosterone in March, my plan if not Feb after my 18th, then she will see where I'm at in April and see if a team switch will work! Overall, the meeting was a success! I feel so glad to have a cool principal. Even though I still gotta use the girls bathroom she understands how kids here might react and I agreed when she said, "it could get physical. I think you know as well as I do that some of these guys are, as you kids call them, hicks and won't react to a transgender respectfully."

^ Sad but true.  Transgender is just too darn confusing for some.

The results of your meeting sound good and reasonable.  Not necessarily a perfect happy ending of fulltime men's locker and bathrooms, but as you said, safety first.  Switching back and forth from women's room to men's room depending on the time of day and environment can be wearing on a guy, but I guess that's just one of the challenges we face during transition.  And that's great that they plan to reevaluate your situation in a few months.
