Title: other members of family transgender?
Post by: Stevie on November 23, 2014, 09:31:11 PM
I'm new here and was wondering if anyone else has another member of their family that is transgender?  Please don't out anyone.
I am a 56 year old MtF and I have a 24 year old son that is FtM, was wondering if that was common. I don't really know any other transgender people which is one of the reasons I joined this site.

My wife is the only one I know of. I don't know my extended family well so there may be others.

I know of a few families like this.

I also met three MTF who where in all in the same class in the same year at school who met each other as women in a support group and had no idea at school that they were all struggling with the issue.

I have a cousin who has considered it  and sometimes goes out dressed to bars and clubs.I know a M2F who has an M2F child,I think it's rare for gender dysphoria to run in families but it does happen

My son is 4 years old and he's showing some signs, but my therapist says it may be too early to tell.

However I'm not really pushing him in that direction, just letting him be.

Signs are:
"I want to go to the girls bathroom" pretty much every time he wants to go (which is often).
Pretending to be female teachers when playing "school" with his sisters
Trying on his sisters' boots and articles of clothing, and putting their bows in his hair.
He even said, "I'm a girl" a few times.
Asks why daddy can wear dresses and he can't. (I've kinda stopped wearing dresses around them now, but I still dress femme).

His mom blames me, says I set a bad example. Obviously she does not know how this works.

I have a cousin who I think is FTM or butch lesbian at the least. He/she hasn't really come out to anyone but is in a committed relationship with a female partner, which he/she pretty much doesn't really tell anyone about, but she (the partner) is there and hangs out with the family and you can tell they are a couple. I am sorry about the pronouns, since my cousin hasn't identified yet I don't know which one to use.

I have an uncle who I suspect is transgender (my father's brother).  I know he did a lot of crossdressing in the 60's, and I believe my mother mentioned he had spoken about becoming a woman, but I imagine it was much more difficult to transition back then.  He remained a very effeminate gay male in a long term relationship with a big burly truck driver.  As a matter of fact, when my wife first met him, she thought he was my grandmother...

He is the only other potential transgender family member I know about.  However, I do know that my family (including close cousins) has a much higher rate of homosexuality (and bisexuality) than the norm...not to say the two are related, but I find that very interesting as well.

I just found out today that my cousin is a trans girl. She's been giving her parents heck for years, and now at 19 she finally came out and said "I'm a young woman!".

I thought that as a trans guy I was the only one in my family. I have a very large extended family so I had always assumed I was the only one. I sent her a message today and we've been talking all day. It's odd being asked for dress advice, but it's the kind if odd that I welcome. Her coming out has made it easier for my family to accept me, even though I came out first. I'm no longer the odd duck out.
