Title: Choosing an endo: Help!
Post by: jeni on December 18, 2014, 10:04:43 PM
I'm totally over the moon with this "problem," but after meeting with my therapist today to talk it over, I now need to make an appointment with an endo to get rolling on HRT!!!

However, I'm a little apprehensive about calling to set up an appointment. Phone calls are decidedly not my thing. I live in an area with limited trans-friendly resources, but I have a list of doctors within reasonable driving distance who other trans folk have recommended. That's a great relief, but I still feel like I don't know what to do/say when I call. None of these are focused on trans treatment as far as I can tell, but they should at least be ok with it.

I don't really know what to ask for when I call the office. Should I just pick one and set up an appointment? Do I need to give them advance notice of why I'm coming? Should I be trying to do a phone vetting of some sort first? (Sorry if these are silly questions, but I'm feeling super clueless right now...)

I hate making calls too..It is good that you already know some docs who will do it though, will make things easier on you.

I called my current doc from my ex therapist's office actually. I think I basically said something like, "Hi, I would like to make an appt with Dr. such and such." Couple months later, had the appt, had all my stuff together already, started hrt that day!

I actually went the other way too. I told my PCP, she referred me to a doc, this one didn't do it, but she referred me to another doc who does do it.

I'd say call around, maybe make more than 1 lol, that's what I did and glad I did it, just in case something goes wrong. See which one can get you in first, which one you feel most comfortable with, one you like the most.

I'd say it would probably be best to give em an idea as to why you are coming. Also, can find out what things they may require or want you to do in the meantime. Maybe can cheat get everything done early :)

Thanks for the advice. I just called and made an appointment for mid-January. Woo!

In the end, I just called the only doc on the list who specialized in reproductive endocrinology. Just asked for an appointment, said "transgender hormone therapy" when asked why, and took the first available. That wasn't so hard.

Happy me!
