Title: A Very Non-Girly Day
Post by: katiej on December 21, 2014, 02:17:04 AM
I spent hours today trying to fix my car.   I didn't have a garage to work in, so I was outside on a very typical Seattle day -- 45 degrees and raining.  I do have a good rain suit for riding my motorcycle in the rain, but It was still cold and very wet.

At one point, I needed to go to the store to get a tool I didn't have.  And since the car was in pieces, I had to take the motorcycle.  I spent an hour driving around to five stores trying to find the tool.  Riding a motorcycle in this weather is not an unpleasant experience...but definitely not comfortable either. And the rain adds an element of danger beyond normal motorcycle riding.

Anyway, as I was riding around town, I realized that with the automotive endeavor and the unpleasant and slightly dangerous motorcycle ride that I was having a very non-girly day.

So tonight I took a bath and gave myself a mini-pedicure.  :)

Has anyone else done something recently that was particularly not girly?

Oh gosh that's such a cute color! I still have yet to get a manicure (nail biter) and due for another pedicure soon.

Um hmm thats a tough question cause I don't really view anything I do in that way like if its boyish or girlish. I guess the most masculine thing I've done recently was ummm *draws a blank lol...Oh I know, I practiced singing in a male pitch.

I don't really take notice wether something is masculine or not but I played  some HALO game with my  foster brother yesterday on his xbox 360. I am not really a competitive person but we played against each other and I kicked his ass! ( after a couple of trys)

I recently drained, pressure washed, did plaster repair and refilled my in ground pool. I am responsible for most of the "guy" stuff in my house. Sometimes I get a little down (dysphoric?) about it but I love it when my wife calls me a badass bitch :)

According to social norms, everyday ;D I do computer programming as a living, I'm a gamer, I play fps/dota/fighting games/ racing sim games. I personally think gender labels are stupid and stopped caring for a long long time.

I occasionally have days like that happen to me. BTW I live near Seattle in B.C. Canada, so I know all about your weather woes.

My recent "Very Non-Girly Day" goes like this:

I had no choice but to go to a semi-formal dinner party last Thursday. Since I am not out to certain people yet especially the people hosting the party (I'm simply put just not mentally or emotionally ready to come out to them yet), I pretty much had to revert back to boy mode as much as possible. After the dinner I was left feeling down and dysphoric I guess is the best word. Anyways when I got home I binged on girl mode to make myself feel better lol. Among the many things I did: I had a shower and fixed my hair back to the way I like it, I watched one of my favorite movies and danced to the soundtrack, the next day I cleaned my apartment (which I keep obsessively clean) and I went out to the department store to buy new perfume. Basically anything that made me feel better about myself and made me feel happy.

A day in the wrong gender can really do a number on me; even on a regular day (aka girl-mode) something as simple as a phone call which I have to answer as a boy can derail my day. I hope as my life continues these off-days get fewer and fewer!

According to social norms, pretty much everyday is a non-girly day. I listen to heavy metal, play racing games and fps's (which I'm pretty good at) I (have to) dress in my guy clothes which are all of my clothes(I'm stealth). So yeah..

I play with my ham radio set and do all my work on one of our cars. The other car gets factory service since it's free under warranty. I also chop wood and do home improvement, like drywall, plumbing and electrical. Right now we are doing a minor kitchen Reno and I have to fix the dishwasher too.

Almost every day!

I work on an urban farm... we do it all: fixing up houses, building high-tunnels (greenhoses), digging through rocky soil (imagine 5 foot deep, 15 feet by 8 feet with a maddox), engine work... all sorts of very hard stuff.

I have to wear jeans and a t-shirt or flannel to work and never get to wear anything cute :(

Right now, I'm pretty horribly bruised and very sore. I need to remember that I can't treat my body like I used to :/ Even though I do all these hard things, I don't see them as masculine. I've known many tough women farmers throughout my life, and compared to them I'm a wimp!

That is an awesome color and a mini-pedi sounds like a great idea  ;D

These might sum up how non-girly my week has been.

I am doing an engine swap, plasti dipping the car (polymer based alternative to automotive paint), and then finally bagging and tuning it. This is not really anything you'd hear from a girl, "Oh, I'm just stancing my hatchback for performance."

$3,000 invested into turning an economic hatchback into a street car, not particularly girly at all.

Another thing about this, I'm all about JDM (Japanese Domestic Motors)..... thing is..... this car is Korean, getting an engine swapped in from another Korean car....

I don't like....... no fun in KDM.

I work in a machine shop mainly doing finishing work. Seems like a particularly non-lady like activity. However, I do wear very girly clothes and no one cares cause I do my job without being told. I make educated guesses on what to do then do it.

Well this makes me feel better as we have been planing on homesteading on 5 acres of land and I have told my wife we can still do this if she wants there are many women that work on a farm and we "women" can do anything the boys can do we just may do it differently.

^totally, we need more female permaculture/homesteading leaders! Time to stop letting the men take all the fame

I listen to metal, shred on guitar, fix everything that breaks, and am about to take a chainsaw to my Xmas tree.  Maybe tonight I'll take a shot of hard liquor and watch basketball before I fire up my drill press to make drain holes for planter boxes.

BFD. I'm still a girl all the way.

I'd say 95% of my days are non-girly days. Hell at this moment I'm listening to Front Line Assembly, wearing baggy clothes, and programming of all things, with a cup of black coffee to boot!!!

That said, if I feel like painting my nails later aint nothin' gonna stop me! Just doin' my thang

Amazing share ladies :) it shows courage - I am inspired. I have a desk job and have a part time job working for a huge beauty supply chain Se___ra.
We are blessed to be working for a company that doesn't care about our personal choices but rather looks at our performance.

Non-girly days happen all of the time out in country at my house.  My wife and I recently had to replace the sewage effluent pump and check valve for our septic pumping station to our lagoon.  She is cis and I had just had breast augmentation 1 week prior, so she did all of the heavy lifting.  We called it Two Girls Plumbing. :)

That is so cool.   I have told my wife even if i transition i will still have my knowledge in my head and can use it.  Sure i may not be able to lift as much but there are ways to get around it most of the time.  Work smarter not harder.
