Coming Attractions: 'Boy Meets Girl,' An Unlikely Twist On The Teen Rom-Com

The title is simple, evocative, and familiar. "Boy Meets Girl." At first glance it registers as one of the most basic narrative developments possible, a la "boy meets girl, boy marries girl, boy has baby with girl, etc..." But Eric Schaeffer's new film has something different in mind.

Starring transgender actress Michelle Hendley, this take on the teenage romantic dramedy breaks down the heterosexist, gendered tropes of its genre for something altogether different.

This looks like it might be really cool. I wish it said when/where it was coming out. I'd be excited to see it.

The film's website has it's first screening as Feb 6th in NYC, and a few dates after that in a few other cities. Apparently it will also be moving to a VOD service(Netflix etc.) in sometime in the Winter/Spring.

I'd love to see this.  It's playing in Palm Springs March 13th, which happens to be a Friday off for me.  When I go to the theater page, it doesn't yet list movie times for March 13th.

My wife and I just saw this at a special viewing.  I gotta say it's fantastic.  Also, there's finally a transgirl playing a transgirl so that's nice.  She's an amazing actress, to boot.  Everything in the story is very touching and pretty honest.

It's definitely got some commercial appeal so I'm hoping it will become a rather mainstream pick for rentals down the road for people who are just looking for a regular romantic comedy.  It really helps fight the stereotypes.

Film Shot In Vermont Is A Classic Love Story With A Transgender Heroine
By JANE LINDHOLM & AMANDA SHEPARD
March 20, 2015

The film Boy Meets Girl is in some ways a very traditional "Will they, won't they?" love story, but also works to break the stereotype of what love looks like in 2015.

The film's director, Eric Schaeffer, lives part-time in Vermont and filmed much of the movie here. He joined Vermont Edition to talk about the recently released film and how it's been received.

This was a good article where the director goes in depth to talk about going out of his way to find the perfect transgender actress.

I'm very much in love with this movie! The Michelle Hendley is absolutely gorgeous. The humor in the movie is top notch, some of which only the LGBTQ crowd would pick up on. One of my favorite things is there is no overt violence towards the main character. I'm glad I bought this movie and would advise anyone to at least watch it once...cause lord knows I've watched 3-4 times already.

I cried in the end of course. :eusa_boohoo:

I want to order the DVD next month so I can have this movie on hand at all times.
