Hey guys,
I recently came across this article http://www.afterpsychotherapy.com/body-dysmorphic-disorder/ (are we allowed to post links?) and it got me thinking. I'm wondering what you guys would have to say about it.
I know it's not what we (or at least I) want to hear about this whole trans thing, but I wonder whether what he's saying could be a valid point? I'd imagine therapists that require a lengthy period of therapy before HRT would want to rule this sort of thing out before they get someone to medically transition, but still... I guess I'm thinking about this because I sort of do have misogynistic views sometimes, but also feminist views. I've noticed that a bunch of people have mentioned the same thing around here too. Just wondering what people have to say with regards to his opinion.
I find the way he is saying what he is saying completely objectionable, the way he responds to the people challenging him more objectionable and patronising, and finally...
His theory falls apart when you consider the children born with damaged genitals and raised in their opposite gender role. Completely unaware of their 'true' gender they all experienced severe dysphoria and needed to transition.
That wasn't a coincidence. It's also not a coincidence that physically intersex children are no longer gendered at birth but allowed to develop cognitively and mentally before having any medical procedures to correct natures mistake.
This intellectual bully might want to see gender as being xx or xy and nothing to do with brains; he might also rigidly fix femininity and masculinity to male and female. He is wrong though.
He will also, as has already started evidenced by the comments thread, make life more difficult for trans people and cause more non acceptance.
From this article:
QuoteAlso, on a factual basis, there is no scientific evidence to substantiate the theory that people are "born into" bodies with genders that don't match their emotional, psychological genders.
Total malarkey. Calls into question everything this quack says.
Totally agree with cassieohpia and suzifrommd, and with Lauren and Maddy's comments on that original link (didn't read the comments beyond those).
If all it takes is anecdotal evidence, then I think I have found enough anecdotes in the last few days of being here of people who were doing well enough socially, professionally and in their family lives that they shouldn't have even thought about transitioning or gender dysphoria, if it was only a psychiatric issue. There are enough examples of people with loving parents and well-nurtured childhoods who don't have a whiff of any psychiatric issues, but they do deal with GD and being TG/TS. And there is at least some scientific evidence of non-obvious biological reasons for GD (maybe not enough to be regularly used for diagnosis, but it exists nevertheless), which this person with '30+ years in the profession' seems to have missed, or deliberately ignored.
His post just seems like a lame excuse to take cheap shots at people with differing opinions.
It's garbage, why did you drag it in from the curb?
I became physically ill reading that garbage.
I expressed at 5 to my Mom and felt female inside all my life. I often refer to my desire to have surgeries as corrective surgery. So according to the article I fit the view. But he stated he isn't an experienced trans psychologist. So perhaps what looks similar is different when studied further.
Where does shame come into gender dysphoria. Toby does what he does because somewhere in his life someone made him feel insecure about himself. Look at all the celebrities (the Kardsahians in particular) who have surgery just because they want to look young. One of the problem, I believe, is that older people people are not respected like in other countries.
Everyone I know knew that they were different when they were children. This has nothing with shame. A society that won't let them be who they are the ones who do the shaming. In conclusion, this guy is full of it.
What a steaming pile of crap. Dysmorphia has nothing to do with having a brain structure that more resembles your GNAAB.
Maybe I should write articles about theoretical physics or brain surgery? Seriously, this guy should be the one feeling shame for writing that.

Actually, we're not supposed to post links until we're "Family" status.
Usually it's overlooked.
After reading that link, I kinda wish it had been enforced.
I learned a very long time ago paper will stand still for anything.
Everyone who does not understand has there theory.
Mine is it is a form of the IS process.
That's it, no outside source is to blame or influence.
So I say believe or reject what you want.
Just my nickels worth of life with GD.
