So here's a think that was sparked of by one of Paris Lees' columns about Leelah Alcorn. Paris said she had been listening to Annie Lennox over the weekend because she was feeling down and Annie Lennox was what she listens to when she's down. It was what her Mother listened to. Me, when I am feeling maudlin, I will listen to Paul Simon, it is what my parents listened to.
What music do you listen to when you need an audio cuddle?
Rosie
Janis Joplin Joni Mitchell Jethro Tull Jimi Hendrix, Sir Elton, Led Zeppelin Joe Cocker
I guess it depends on what type of insanity drove me down. Sometimes I would listen to Bizet, maybe some Brahms or Chopin. Other times, a bit of Coltraine or Parker. However, tonight I have mostly been listening to Slayer.
" Me, when I am feeling maudlin, I will listen to Paul Simon, it is what my parents listened to."
"Say, ain't we walking down the same street together
On the very same day?"
Graceland is my all time favourite.
For work, Autechre and Radiohead never let me down.
"Like I'm falling out of bed
From a long and weary dream
Finally I'm free of all the weight I've been carrying"

Loreena McKennitt, probably.. her voice just connects with my core. It's cathartic to listen to her music and just cry.. either from the beauty or the sadness.

That's Karen Carpenter's voice for me. So yeah, I guess my audio cuddle is the Carpenters. :)

This, Yes!
For me it's all over the place. I love listening to anything that fits the mood, some that don't. I could be really depressed and the only thing that could cheer me up might be hardcore rap or heavy metal. If I'm sad maybe some classical music, or electronic stuff. If I'm in the mood to rock, than by god let those guitars scream and those drums bang. I do listen to depressing music if I'm down too. Sometimes you can feel the lyrics and they just describe what you feel. i'll just lay down and listen to it to get an understanding of what I feel. than it may be a song that I really like come on and I just can't so no. It really gets in a better mood.
Let It Go from Frozen, Bleed It Out from Linkin Park, and Radioactive from Imagine Dragon.
R&B,
Justin Timberlake (20/20 is my favourite), Alicia Keys etc...

"Bonny Portmore" (theme song for Highlander 3) used to be one of my fav tracks :).
Now, when I feel dysphoric, it is either Mike Oldfield "To France" (sometimes Bonny Tyler "if You were a woman and I was a man", lol) or David Arkenstone "Le Mystère des Femmes"

For extra edge during workouts it is Scarface "Push it to the limit" or sometimes Terminator theme, lol.
When that extra edge is needed to get into specific mood for work or personal issues, it is Breaking Benjamin "Blow Me Away", All That Remains "Two weeks". Sometimes, to get more focused yet remain calm and gentle it is Frozen "Let it go" or Khumba "The real me".

I think that is quite an impressive array of music and covers a huge variety. No classical though, which suits me. I was forced to play cello for 8 years so find all classical music a bit intimidating.
Gracelands is a bit modern for me, especially when compared with the melancholy beauty of Old Friends or Night Game.

The undeniable *Tonetta* turns my frown upside-down any time I'm in trouble :~)

Yes! I don't usually stick to one particular artist, just whatever songs pop into my head but Illusion is always one of them.
Enya..exile is my personal song. But love them all..Heart,CSNY,any good wooden music, eagles,Stevie Ray Vaughan.Modern rendition of stringed Celtic music.
I'm probably in the minority in this (no big suprise there) but when I'm down I allow myself to stay in it. It is through doing this that I am able to ID the problem, then it falls into one of two catagories: something I can change or the opposite. If it can be changed I change it, if not screw it, I realize why let something like that bother me. My music remains unchanged. Dani
When I'm feeling bad I listen to Pink Floyd and the OKcomputer album from Radiohead.
Why don't we live together?

PSB... Blast from the past :P But is a good track, think it was re-released in 2001 as a remix???
Nice :)

lol! I never did leave the 80's ... I flatly refuse to migrate ;~)
I like Sufjan Stevens a lot, it's very mellow :-)
Recently I've been getting into other stuff, like Patrick Wolf, Austra, Metric... and I liked Operator Please when I was a teenager. Those are generally more poppy.
Hi Ara,
What Genre? Reading his profile it could be C&W influenced... got to admit I have always had a bent towards Dance, RnB, Reggae, House, Electronic etc..., although I do enjoy a lot of cross genre singers...
I'll try and have a listen... 8)
Hi Sarah, I always confound people with my music tastes, don't dislike the 70's, 80's - right through to today, but always moved with what goes down well at the clubs; yeah used to rave... but gave up the club scene (apart from local clubs and DJ nights) about 15 years ago... got a bit of a poke in the eye by some late teens....

With Sufjan Stevens genre is a hard question. His albums All Delighted People, Illinois (most famous) and Avalanche have a folk/alternative rock sound to them, but they also have a strange high school band instrumentation to them as well. His album Age of Ads is electronic. A Sun Came is sort of grungy rock, and it's his earliest album as far as I can tell. Lately he has joined Sisyphus, a RnB/hip hop group. Seven Swans is good, very much folk but really good.
Finally there's his other (weirder) stuff.
Enjoy your Rabbit is electronic and entirely instrumental. He teamed up with a symphony orchestra to make it into a ballet, Run Rabbit Run.
The BQE is a ballet inspired by the Boston train line.
He has a couple of Christmas Albums that I enjoy.
Hope that answers your question :-)

For me, it depends on why I'm in that mood.
But among my most listened to when I'm down are Linkin Park, Breaking Benjamin, Within Temptation, Dave Matthews Band, Pentatonix, Celtic Woman, and Lindsey Steriling.
Other music I just lose myself in while I listen. It's like I'm transported to a whole other world. This is what I do most often when I feel down. Music that does this includes works by John Rutter, Gustav Holst, Frank Ticheli, Maurice Durfle, Beethoven, Rossini, Aaron Copeland, Mendelssohn, hymn arrangements, movie scores, and Celtic music.
im always listening to the same music when im feeling great/down
metal/rock
Days Are Gone by Haim is totally comforting to me. Also Devotion by Jessie Ware and definitely Disintegration by the Cure...when Plainsong starts in after those chimes its like this wave of warmth and nostalgia and sadness washes over me everytime.
