Some, many tell me, say, "Look at far we've come". I say, "Look at how far we have to go." Today is a day that many Americans shun, dislike or outright hold distain. I understand that. As hard as it may be, I understand that. Today is the day that we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and honor him as well as his memory. He's known for saying, "Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed." I like that. So many do not. MLK wasn't about race, he was about equality, basic human rights afforded to some but not others. And this is the crux of the civil rights movement. At that time in history, race was the center issue. I hang my head in shame at my two home states. While they strive for economic growth, they still practice oppression and deny equality to all. One of my home states is to host the RNC in 2016; it may also host the DNC also. This is causes great pride upon many. But I ask, how can either the RNC or the DNC even consider, let alone select, a city within a state that not only practices but also legislatively endorses oppression? And what does this truly say about America? The oppressors are reluctant to give up any of their rights and luxuries. I understand that too. I understand that living under two measures of equality is living under no equality at all. So today is the day to think about not where we have been, but how much further we have yet to go.
