Title: Getting back to work and exercise after DI
Post by: Konnor on January 24, 2015, 01:32:29 PM
How long did you guys wait after surgery to go back to work? And how long did you wait until going back to working out (running and cardio/lifting)? I'm hoping to go back to work after a month. I am an engineer and 80% of my job is sitting at a desk working on a computer. I'm hoping to be able to jog after 6-8 weeks, and a bit longer for lifting. I'm having DI and lipo with Medalie in March and just trying to get an idea of my timeline. What has been your experiences? Thanks guys!

I was back to work in 3 weeks, though I've called off a couple days and gone home early because of my skin irritation post-op. I have an IT desk job.

At my one month follow up, doc told me I could do anything I'm capable of physically. Still can't get my elbows above shoulder height at the side, a bit higher to the front, but I can do pushups and rows and the like just fine.

I went back to work 2.5 weeks later.  Desk job.  I wish I had taken 3 weeks, just so I would have been more comfortable.  Past 3 weeks might feel too long for you, but I think there is no downside to having 4 weeks if you have the time.

Garramone said 6 weeks before getting your heart rate up.  I personally would wait longer for lifting.

Sounds to me like you have a good timeline in your head.

Thanks for the replies, guys! I'll tell my employer 3-4 weeks then. That's great to hear your range of motion is quite good after a month, Jay. I thought it would be longer so I hope I follow suit. The disparities in return time to exercise are interesting. Hopefully some other guys chime in with their experiences and info from other surgeons. I'll also check with Medalie on what he recommends for both of my questions. Thank you both very much for your replies!
