Title: Regional Supermarkets
Post by: Valerie on December 19, 2005, 07:11:05 PM
OK, this might sound ridiculous to some of you, but we'll see if anyone replies anyway...

Ever notice how the supermarket chains vary from one region to another?  Whaddya' have where you live?

When I lived on the Jersey coast, about 40 minutes north of A.C.,  I had:

A&P
Shop-Rite
Pathmark
Superfresh

Now I'm N. Central FL and I have:

Publix (most popular, I think, but you don't wanna' know the nickname my mom gives it >:D)
Albertson's
Winn-Dixie (gross, I only go there in a pinch)
Kash-N-Karry(same story as Winn-Dixie; plus, the students call it "Kash-N-Scary")
Food Lion (not very many)

I've heard rumors that we have Piggly-Wiggly here, but I haven't seen one in my town. Just as I wouldn't take any potential child of mine to "Kuddly Kids Day Care",  I don't think that I'd get my food at a place called 'Piggly Wiggly'....  :-\

Then of course, almost everywhere, we have the Wal*Mart Super Shopping Center !  :P

Obviously,

Try this:  take out the 'L' and prounouce the 'U' as a long vowel...   ;D  It took me awhile to get over shopping there after she so cruelly tainted my unsuspecting, innocent mind   And believe it or not, it's much cleaner than Kash-N-Scary and the others  :D  LOL...

P&C
PriceChopper
Wegmans
(Danny Wegmans puts any WalMart Superstore to shame when it comes to food!  At least one of his superstores has a cooking classroom!  You can sit down to Asian, Italian, subs and/or buffet while getting your film processed, getting your prescriptions filled and then get your grocery shopping done.  It's the only place I have around here where I can get real vanilla beans for when I cook.)

If memory serves me correctly, Piggly-Wiggly was the first, of what we call today, grocery store.  You had to weave your cart through a maze of aisles before you could ask for your essentials at the counter.  Going through the aisle maze dramatically increased impulse buying and profits.  That's why we have all those aisles today.  It's also why the stores move items from time to time - You go to where your item USED to be and you find something that you may not have noticed before.

Yes, they do have Trader Joe's here in California (southern California anyway).

I go to Stater Brothers mostly, but we do have Ralph's, Albertsons and many others.  I have never gone to Wal Mart.

I've lived a few places.  Here's a couple I can remember.

Huntsville, AL
------------------
Winn-Dixie (which seems to be going out of business)
Wal-Mart (everybody has Wal-Mart don't they?)
Publix (sometimes pronounced with a long "u" sound with the "l" left in)
Costco (I've never been in there so I don't even know if they have groceries)
Star-Market (They sell buffalo meat which is excellent IMO)
Kroger
Piggly Wiggly (mostly a rural market)
there was a Bruno's and Food-World but they left

Chattanooga, TN
-----------------------
Ingles
FoodLion
Bi-lo
Kroger
Fresh Market
Save-A-Lot

Picayune, MS
------------------
I think there was a shop-rite or save-a-lot but mostly people just went to Wal-Mart

My sister lives in Wiesbaden, Germany... she says they have a wal-mart there too.  (I wonder if it's a super-center or an über-center :)

Well, here in south GA we have..

Wally-World... I do buy there sometimes, but due to their kill the local small store, I try to patronize the local merchant...

also have Harvey's.. south GA only I believe..

Winn-Dixie

Save-A-Lot

What really struck me recently at Harvey's was a "normal" store on one side of town.. and on the other.. you walk through a metal detector.. hello to grocery shop!!

WOW!!!

In the Booming metropolis of Frankford, we do have an IGA, but nothing compared to Food Lion, Kroeghers etc.

Guess we just have to take what we have close and enjoy
