Title: Mama needs some help
Post by: QuestioningMama on January 26, 2015, 06:43:09 PM
I am mom to a 9 year old who I think is questioning his gender.
I'll  use this to more introduce him and use Turtle instead of his real name:
Turtle is 9 years old and anatomically  a male. From the age of two  he has made statements that made me think he didn't  feel complete. He's  said he wanted to be a stay at home mom when he grew  up and showed us what size he'd want his breasts to be. recently  he started  asking if he was a girl would he get a period  or have to give birth. Two days ago he tried to confiscate  one of my new bras. Instead I let him pic one or two of the bras I had in my drawer. He's  asked if he can get a bikini this summer.
I plan on getting  new bras for him and a bikini if he still wants one in the summer.
I am here to get guidance. I will need to help him tuck when he wears that cute bikini. Help with sizing for bra fillers  and maybe a push in the right direction  for a counselor who specializes  in Transgender  youth issues to help figure out if he is Transgender  or just likes to wear women's  clothes, etc.
I love all of my kids for who they are, not which gender the are/become

What a lucky child 'Turtle' is!!! I applaud you, I truly do. You are a treasure to this world....I only wish more parents (my own included) would be this accepting and nurturing.

hi there! :icon_wave: welcome to susan's. it always makes me super happy to see parents here. as a transgender kid (teenager/almost adult technically, but always a little kid at heart) myself, I can promise you that if "Turtle" is trans, your acceptance and love/care will really be appreciated. gender questioning is so difficult, especially at such a young age, and it's seriously so awesome that you're kind and accepting of your child regardless!

see you around the site!

Hi Mama,

It may be worth having a chat with the local children's hospital endocrinology department to see if they have specialists for trans*kids. It is an area for experts. I'm not sure where you are but if Australia and can give you the names of people to contact.

Hugs to you and your lovely special child. We are all here for you at anytime.

Hopefully you find some other parents here who know good drs to goto.  Just make sure they don't have their own agenda or try to "fix" turtle.  You do in your heart what is good for turtle right now.  You may make a few mistakes, but supporting turtle through this process already puts you ahead of the curve.  Take care;)

Gosh, what an awesome mom! If you have a TBLG clinic in your area (I prefer that abbreviation to LGBT), it's a good place to start. Maybe ask Turtle if they know what the word transgender means. You -- you're an awesome mom!

Welcome to Susan's. It sounds like Turtle is lucky to have you as their mom.  A therapist can help you deal with the things your child will have deal with as well as Turtle.

Welcome -- Turtle is very lucky to have you as their Mom :).

I don't have kids, but I'm a big fan of the blogs "Raising my rainbow" and "Gender mom". The latter is by a mom of a trans daughter, the former by a mom of a genderqueer kid also designated male at birth.
