Laverne Cox Will Star in a CBS Legal Drama
In what could be another milestone role in broadcast TV diversity, CBS has cast transgender actress Laverne Cox in its legal procedural pilot Doubt.
The Orange is the New Black actress will play a transgender Ivy League-educated attorney, described as "competitive as she is compassionate. She's fierce, funny and the fact that she's experienced injustice first hand makes her fight all the harder for her clients."
Good deal -- she is one talented woman. I sorta like that she gets to go from playing a convict to playing a lawyer. (Insert lawyer joke here. When I read this I was overjoyed. All of this exposure is so fantastic!
This is great, but OITNB better still keep going!
It's just a pilot at this time, and most pilots never end up getting aired. I'm not getting my hopes up but I'd really like to see it happen.
Of course I'm married to a lawyer and for that reason, we never watch lawyer shows.
I'm not going to get my hopes up. While, yes, it's great that she's getting a lead role in a prime time show, it is a legal drama show. Historically, they've never really been all that good at accurately representing minorities, especially ones that are kind of outside society's consciousness where people really don't know much about them. (Furry episode of CSI, anybody?)
