I'm out to my family and nearly all my friends, and they've been supportive, or at least accepting. But I have two friends, good ones, to whom I haven't come out before now, because I see them mostly at group and family events where it would be too awkward; I've been trying to get together with them one-on-one for some months now, but their lives are, erm, complicated, and it hasn't happened.
So last night we had them over to dinner -- they finally had a break from all the (exhausting) "complications" in their lives, and they were really up for having some people feed them a very good dinner and generally fuss over them.
It was a great evening, and I did come out to them. They asked a lot of the usual questions (none of the tacky ones, bless their hearts), and the more taciturn one was pretty much "Oh, OK, that makes sense -- cool." But Mary, who's pretty effusive, said "This is fantastic -- now I know why you've been looking so GOOD lately!!"

She had quite a bit more to say, but she kept coming back to that: how much I've changed for the better, and how she couldn't figure out why before now.
I loved it.
Congratulations! Sounds like the kind of friends to keep around. ;D
Go you wonderful guy!!! Glad it worked out. Aren't we our own worse enemies when we already figure out what others will say without asking? :)
Thanks, both!
We sure can be our own worst enemies -- but while we can't chose our families, there's a lot to be said for choosing our friends wisely. I've known these two for around 12 years, and they have big, big hearts.
Mary had in fact said "You look great!" to me, the last 2-3 times I'd seen her -- I just grinned and said "Thanks, Hon."
