Title: Hair? And other things?
Post by: Zasea on February 25, 2015, 05:02:03 PM
How do you guys choose a hairstyle?  I've had the same hair forever and it's stressing me out because I need a "male" haircut but I'm like why bother? I'll just look as ugly as I was before.  I've been on T for two years and I still don't pass and I'm paranoid that people think I'm a freak because I have facial hair but I still look "female" and I'm a bundle of nerves.

And I'm so jealous of all the guys who pass and I just want to be comfortable like them, but I'm not.

How am I supposed to live with this amount of dysphoria?

i choose what i like best when it comes to more masculine hairstyles. my face shape is generally good for most haircuts so i don't worry too much about it. right now i'm sporting the shaved sides with more on top to spike up a bit. kind of like:

i find it is a good masculine hairstyle a lot of people sport lately. if you're having troubles finding one you could just go to a haircutting place and ask them the best style for your face shape.

I've had this too, but I thought wth and decided to get a male haircut. Takes a while to get used too, but I can now see that I don't look as bad as I thought and I actually look masculine (I'm pre T). I used this website to give me ideas for my first male hairstyle http://ftmguide.rassaku.net/(//) which wasn't too drastic and got me used to having short hair. I then got bored of that hairstyle and decided to get an undercut which I was suprises to discover actually suits me, as I have a roundish face. I recommend an undercut as there are so many different types and it's super maclunine, it's an old fashioned 100% male haircut. I alsi think hair products help my dysphoria. I use thickening shampoo and conditioner to make my hair look more like a guy with T as mine is typically fem as I have thin hair. I also use pomade and you can't get more masculine than that. Only men use pomade.

Do you have a decent barber or stylist? When I was learning what hairstyles worked on me I would go in to the stylist and ask him to give me a men's cut that would match my face. He did pretty well and after a few times he and I found something that worked well. Most stylists are happy to accommodate and if they aren't, go with someone else. When I was still pretty new to trying to present male back in my teens I asked my hair stylist to give me a male cut because I was going to be in a play and that worked really well.

In high school I refused to get a hair cut for years. Before leaving for college, I cut it shoulder length and shaggy. It was a common male style at the time. It's never really gotten longer than that.

When I got closer to transitioning, I cut it short. Last year before I came out, I started shaving it down with clippers. Now haircut day is a regular weekly event. I look forward to it, it's low maintenance, cost effective, and no one has said anything to me about it.

I recommend what others said. Go to a good stylist who cuts hair for men and discuss what would look good on you. Find hairstyles you like and take pics with you. I rarely have the time or the patience to go and get a hair cut so I ended up getting clippers and cutting mine myself (even before transition I always cut my own hair). It took a while to get the style right. I watched a lot of videos on cutting men's hair.

I've read often that if you still have feminine features not to cut your hair really short or you'll get that butch lesbian look which I had for a while. Hang in there and I'm sure you'll find a hairstyle to fit you.

Best of luck
