Title: Best 'allows men into women's bathrooms' rebuttal I've seen yet
Post by: frances_larina on March 02, 2015, 10:49:26 PM
Mentioned in the comments section of a news story, this cuts to the quick of the "women's restroom access" scare rhetoric.

"If transgender people are not to be allowed to use the bathroom that matches
their identity, trans men will have to use the women's room, right?

What then, would stop male, non-trans sexual predators from "pretending" to
be trans men to sneak into the Women's room?  It would be far easier than
having to don dress, wig, heels and make-up in order to enter the women's room.

Way to go!  By panicking about transgender people being the "wrong" bathroom,
it's almost assured that male, non-trans rapists will have much easier access to
their women victims!"

Bill C-279: Bathroom amendment may make it easier for sexual predators (http://montrealgazette.com/life/bill-c-279-bathroom-amendment-may-make-it-easier-for-sexual-predators)

In their perhaps honest but misguided zeal to bar trans women from using the women's facilities and thus thwart potential male sexual predators from dressing up as women to gain entry there, Senator Plett and other critics of what has been dubbed "the bathroom bill" seemed to have forgotten about trans males, who presumably could be forced to use women's public facilities — if you apply the same "biological" logic the senator and company are using.

So, now sexual predators don't have to go to all the bother of disguising themselves as women: they can simply pretend to be trans males and walk right in to the women's bathroom.

Here is the article on it (a good read and makes a fantastic point!)

Thank you, well said I'd. I have posted a lengthy comment to my Facebook page with this rebuttal.

If such a ruling were to be enforced, then supporters of such a crazy bill would probably also demand a team of genital inspectors be assembled to validate everyone down below before granting access of the facilities.

Jillian, given the timing I have to assume the comment I read was written by someone who'd read the article you wrote for the Gazette.

Thank you, for such a wonderful application of rational thought and for packaging it in such a way that can easily be used going forward any time conservatives drag out the tired old "rapist will dress up as trans women" scare tactic.

I hereby deem it, "The Page Rebuttal".

I may have posted a few comments on the article, I'm sure the woman who triggered me to post has some serious issues that she needs to deal with, or maybe she's a lost cause (otherwise known as being a TERF)

Bingo.

The existence of a law is not going to magically stop anyone that is intent on attacking someone in any restroom - if a guy wants to attack a female in the restroom he will do so regardless of what the law says - we have jails full of people as proof of that. And of course trans women are no risk whatsoever to anyone in the restroom - we just wanna pee.

The ignorance, hatred, and incessant attacks on us for needing a safe and appropriate place to pee is really getting me upset these days  >:(

I remember when i first transitioned, the student relations guy at college asked me, "What about bathrooms?"

My response? "They're all pretty much the same".

I seriously doubt there's any problem with restroom attackers in Texas to be solved by this bill, anyway. I'd love to see them try to show some stats to juststify it. This looks just like an another attempt at legislated hate. It's one of those things we will never quite see the end of.

If it's an issue of sexual preference, ie a man who is attracted to women could dress up as a trans woman to gain access to a woman's washroom and do something seemy, then that would mean that gay men should't be allowed to use a typical mens room but should be made to use a women's washroom so he won't be tempted. ?

I'm just spitballing here trying to make sense of all this.

I have a new name, it's female. I live as a woman. I'm in the middle of having my sex marker changed on my personal documentation. I use women's washroom because to use a men's room would make the men in the washroom a hell of a lot more uncomfortable than the women in the women's washroom.

And for what it's worth I have never seen any nudity in a women's washroom. There is nothing in there for a male to peak at. I think the only perverseness in this whole situation is the perverse way these politicians can think. Someone should interview these weirdos and find out what they think actually goes on in women's washroom.

Gendered washrooms are obsolete. They don't accomodate families, small children, disabled, gender minorities. Trend needs to be for private, locked door. It's not a public function.

Those cost more money and need more space. There should be a gender neutral option but for now I think gendered restrooms are here to stay.

BTW gendered restrooms do accommodate disabled

There is no argument or logical reasoning that will solve the bathroom bill issues, because these bills aren't about rational things. They are about hate. If they could get away with exiling gay people, they'd do that too. To bigots, we trans people aren't distinguishable from gay people anyway. Thank goodness they haven't figured out a way to protest a trans person getting married, whether in a straight or gay or other relationship.

I've seen a lot of great arguments on this issue here, but really I think the only solution is implementation of gender-neutral bathrooms. These would generally be safer for trans people, and no one could whine about us using the right restroom. (Not to mention, it would be helpful for other reasons! They'd have changing beds in places where single dads could access them, for instance. To my knowledge they don't have them in men's rooms.)

Men's restrooms here have them last I could remember.

The only difference between M and F restroom these days is the urinals and bins to dispose of tampons and pads.
