Alabama Supreme Court orders halt to same-sex marriages

Weeks after a United States District Court judge in Mobile ordered a probate judge there to issue same-sex marriage licenses, the Alabama Supreme Court has ordered a halt to same-sex marriages in the state.

I wonder if this isn't a shot in favor of general states rights rather than entirely an attack against equality.

When "push" comes to "shove", the Feds always win. Some in the South haven't quite realized that yet.

I've had a hard time trying to find any evidence that anything has actually changed. All I know is that Mobile was specifically ordered at the federal level to issue licenses and were doing so. Now that this happened again, Mobile has stopped issuing licenses in direct violation of the federal order. I'm fairly certain this is legal grounds for the judge in Mobile to be held in contempt. There is only one other county I could find being mentioned and I have no idea if they were issuing licenses anyway. Either way I'm not happy about it because I pay Alabama State taxes. This means my own money is being used against the LGBT community. I'm not happy about this. I'm not happy that even before this happened again, there were 10 counties not issuing licenses. Oh and our governer said we have a nasty deficit. Hello dumbass order all counties to issue licenses and support gay marriage. By doing so you will cut the budget by eliminating all these pointless lawsuits that are going to go in favor of same-sex marriage anyway.

Not exactly sure why I'm so pissed about this since I've been single since Dec 2001 and have no signs of getting married any time soon.

Get involved with legislation at your State Capitol. That is the only way things change. I have been busy here in OKC! :)

I was passionate about same-sex marriage while I was still a happily married straight guy. It's not about whether I'd ever want to do it, it's about oppression and bullying of the minority by the majority.

So I've seen updates on this issue. Apparently only Macon county has been confirmed in issuing licenses. The status of 8 is unknown. All others have stopped as a result of this. I hate this state. I hate the filthy cockroaches that are infecting our corrupt government. I don't like republicans, but even at the national level they haven't generally been this disgusting.

Exactly. I'm still pissed I let my sister talk me out of voting on the issue in the 2004 Ohio amendment. My sister said that I didn't have the right to vote on the issue since I wasn't married. It made me sick for days. I let her bully me into getting her way. She tried to tell me that if two men get married it ruins her marriage. Yet I have another sister who got divorced and remarried. That means absolutely nothing to her because she needed to get out of that relationship so it was ok. I'm sorry but you can't have it both ways. Either any external and non related marital issues affect your marriage or none do. You can't have it both ways.

I'm not surprised. The deep south is one of the most homophobic bible thumping anti equality places I have ever seen. I am ashamed to live in Alabama.

Alabama is one of the few states I have never visited.  I'm beginning to think that I'll never once set foot in Alabama.

I'm from Ohio. I remember when I took my job back in 2010. I was like Oh God Alabama? I don't want to live in that craphole. It hasn't been that bad. Fortunately I live in Huntsville. It really isn't Alabama. Unfortunately Huntsville is affected by Alabama. Huntsville was one of the 10 original areas where same-sex marriage started last month. They are saying now the only reason they aren't issuing any more is that there is a possibility they could nullify all of the licenses issued in the past month. I don't see that happening, but I do sort of understand at the same time.

This is what happens when you have elected judges...

Huntsville is the exception, but its bound by the legal chaos. Apparently they are only not issuing licenses out of concern for the long term legality. For example anyone that wants to get divorced as of today wouldn't be able to.
