Hey,
I'm sure this thought hasn't really crossed many minds, but in Australia, transgendered people are placed in male prisons. I'm not 100% how it works, but there have been TG's incarcerated in male prisons.
What are your thoughts? Should they be segregated and if so, how would that affect you self and well being?
There are so many small things that aren't considered during transition. It must be hard work.
I am an admirer and have a lot of respect for the changes made and he effort that is put into transition, I hope you don't take any of my comments offensively and if you do, please tell me.
I imagine that would be a horrifying experience. Not that prison is easy for anyhow, but being transgender is especially hard.
Before I can answer any of your questions though I need you to clarify something. When you say transgendered people put in male prisons, are you specifically referring to mtfs (male-to-females) or does that include ftms too (female-to-males)?
Here in the US for both jails and prisons they genitals when placing people. So basically if you are preop MTF, you go to a male jail/prison, if you are postop MTF you go to a woman's jail/prison and of course it's the same thing for Ftm's.

Correct. The case is Farmer v Brennan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmer_v._Brennan).
They do segregate trans prisoners in some cases though, so even if you're in a male prison you should not be in general population.
