Title: Michigan Name change - new BC check box question
Post by: ElDudette on March 15, 2015, 03:45:27 PM
So I started filling out the paperwork. And I got to the question about issuing a new birth cert, I was born in Illinois, does anyone know if Michigan will create a new cert for me or do I have to do the name change here then send away to Illinois to get a new birth cert w/ my name on it?

Since it'll be a big pain in the ass, I'm guessing the later of those two..... >.<

I am very certain Michigan won't create a new birth certificate for you.  You will need to get this in the state you were born in.  If the state refuses to change your gender on your birth certificate, I would highly recommend getting a passport, which in essence, replaces a birth certificate when you need to validate your US citizenship, from my experience, anyways.

Yeah, that's kind of what I suspected.. it sucks that MI changed their law a bit back, it used to be you could get your name changed on the DL w/ the court order, now you have to have it changed on your BC first, which means waiting game mailing stuff back and forth to ILL... hopefully Cook County has gotten quicker than they weere when back when I got married :(

TY for the info, I'll have to do that with the passport then. ILL requires a surgery inorder to change the marker :( *sigh*
