Title: Northeast US top surgery recommendations
Post by: nyrangers30 on March 17, 2015, 12:03:45 AM
Hey everyone, I'm from New Jersey and am in the process of researching surgeons in the Northeast area. I'm looking for New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, or Delaware. I have found one in PA that interests me (Kathy Rumer) but I'm looking for other options. I'm willing to travel further if it promises an optimal surgeon. If anyone has had a procedure done by a doctor in an area near me, please let me know! Thanks!

Beverly Fisher is in MD. She's very good (fairly close).

Dr. Mc Ginn and Dr. Leis in Philadelphia, I think Dr. Rumer also around that area.

One guy here had his surgery done by Dr. Rockmore in NY, and he seemed to be pleased with his results.

Dr Leis has said some very transphobic things. But McGinn has a good reputation. Also I think the OP mentioned Dr Rumer.

I'm in the mid-Atlantic and Dr. Fischer gets my vote. She's just outside of Baltimore, so not too terribly far out of the range you listed. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think she's been doing this the longest out of any of the surgeons in the region. I also considered a few other local surgeons in VA, and can get you those names if you're interested in going a little further south.

Yes, Fischer has been doing them since the 1990's.  She is known for her keyhole/peri.  I would have gone to Fischer if I hadn't gone to Garramone.  I met her and she is really great.

My understanding is that Rockmore is new to doing this work, but there have been a few guys here who were happy with his work.

I tend to be more comfortable with people who have done a lot of these surgeries, and personally wouldn't consider going to someone who didn't have a lot of FTM top surgeries under their belt.  But, that is just me.

I wouldn't consider Leis.  I think he does poor work more often than he does good work, and he is also quite disrespectful to transpeople (and other surgeons), in my opinion.

I met Kathy Rumer, very nice, but hasn't been doing this long.

No opinion on McGinn.

Like I said, I would go to Fischer if I was in the area you are.

It really depends on you. You can never know for 100% if the surgeon who is highly recommended by others is going to give YOUR BODY the optimal/ideal results and then even care for you  properly  post-op.  While one person would like their results and the care they received, the other patient would receive anything but as if the person who they were talking about couldn't be anymore different.
I think the surgeons who have the longest/most experience sounds reasonable.  You may get a feel from them (how they talk to you and such) from your initial consultation with different ones mentioned above.

Thank you for the feedback everyone. I have looked at the before and after pictures of some of these surgeons and Dr. Fischer is by far the best one in my opinion. Especially since I want the keyhole procedure, those results were the best I saw. Dr. Rumer would be my second choice because I liked her results too, but Fischer's looked a bit better and seems to have a lot more experience. I also like how she does revisions free of charge.

If you are looking for peri, you should also look up Rockmore (NY). I've heard good things. But you could not go wrong with Fisher imo. IMO, she has maybe the top 5 results for DI.

I had mine done by Dr Mordcai Blau in White Plains NY. I work in the bodybuilding world and have known Dr Blau for many years for his work on bodybuilders with gynecomastia. In fact her does around 400 gyno surgeries a year. He did my chest last November and left absolutely no scars.

If your surgery is covered by some sort of insurance, then my response is moot.
But, if you're paying out of your own pocket, you're only an hour flight to Dr. Brassard in Montreal.
I met a number of guys there while I was recovering...they seemed quite happy.
And, as an American, your US$ converted into C$ yields a 20% currency advantage....so it's like getting 20% off.

Just a thought.

I ended up going with Dr. Melissa Johnson in Massachusetts, and I'm happy with my results. I was between her, Dr. Beverly Fischer in MD, and Dr. Medalie in Ohio (midwest, but not so far away).

All 3 excellent choices, imo. I forgot about Dr Melissa Johnson.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I think I'm going to look into Dr. Fischer and Dr. Rumer first, and if they don't seem like optimal options for me then I'll look at others :)

What I don't like about Rockmore's chest is the downward diagonal scars.

Paul Weiss is in New York.  I've seen some great results of his

but as far as his personality i've heard mixed reviews....some guys said he was great and friendly....other guys said he seemed a little "weird", not sure what they meant by that

Had my top surgery done with Dr. Rockmore and I have no visible scars. His office also works with insurance companies. I had a small chest so he did a minimally invasive procedure with the incisions around the areola. Mine was done in 2012 and I know he has expanded this area of his practice. He is actually assisting in my phalloplasty procedure this summer as well. Very nice guy and the staff at the office and in the surgery center is amazing. Although he may not seem to have many results out there to look at, he is simply a great plastic surgeon. His consultations are also free. However, you'll know after meeting with surgeons which one is the right one for you. I had multiple consults with Dr. Medalie, Dr. Garramone, and Dr. Brownstein in CA but ultimately chose Dr. Rockmore. I would just recommend going with the surgeon that you're the most comfortable with and is on the same page with what you expect for the results.
