Title: Coming out to HR later today...wish me luck.
Post by: StrykerXIII on March 19, 2015, 12:40:03 AM
I posted elsewhere on the site that I was in trouble at work for my hair being too long. Well, at 2:30pm today, I will be sitting down to talk with HR about the issue. I've already printed off information regarding the Lexington-Fayette Urban County EEOC, and the local Human Rights Campaign. Turns out the LFUHRC office is literally right across the street from where I work!

I'm hoping to sit down and peacefully work this through. Should they tell me that I need documentation from a gender therapist for it to be an acceptable exception, so be it. I'll comply and cut my hair. But I'm hoping that they'll be open-minded about it and see what they can work out. In any case, I know my rights in this situation, and should they talk termination, I will take legal action on grounds of discrimination...but again, I'm hoping it won't come to that. I'd like to resolve this peacefully.

Regardless of the outcome, wish me luck...I'm sure going to need it.

Good luck. I hope everything goes well. It sounds like your well prepared for it though with all the researching and planing you have put in. What did find out from the supervisor? Hugs

He only told me that it was "now an HR issue", which means he can't talk about it, same as an employee being terminated. This kind of worries me, honestly...things that turn into "HR issues" tend to end in termination.

Ah. Well go in with your head held high because you have nothing to be ashamed of. I hope it doesn't end in termination for you because you have every right to fight it if it does. Hugs

Are you seeing a therapist?

It is very common for a therapist to supply such a letter, saying that XXX is seeing me as they are transitioning their gender from M to F and as such should be treated as F.

I'm currently not. Still waiting on an insurance card to arrive.

Good luck girl!!!

If it turns ugly and you need a referral to a plaintiffs labor and employment attorney you can PM me and I can get some names for you.

I'm looking forward to not getting a PM from you  ;)

I know what will end up happening...I'll pull up to the office, paperwork at the ready, and then chicken out. I always do  ::)

I'm just afraid to lose my job. I don't love this job, not by a long shot, but I'm so financially strapped that I literally can't afford to go for one week without income.

Good luck. It will all work out. Hopefully you won't have to fight and they will understand the situation. Although you might have to educate them on transgender issues, because I bet they have never dealt with this type of issue before.
