Poll
Question:
MTF only please. Are you predominantly left handed or right handed?
Option 1: Left handed
votes: 22
Option 2: Right handed
votes: 34
I suspect that this has been surveyed before. (Apologies). Anyway research, would suggest that mtfs are significantly more likely to be left handed than the general male population which is about 11%. (and more likely also to be employed in electronics/software or similar.) I realize that there are flaws in this data gathering exercise but hey. I missed out ambidextrous but did say "preferred" just to cover myself.
When I was still working in the motor trade I quickly developed the ability to use either hand for most tasks as vehicle manufacturers can be quite unfriendly to the idea that space needs to be left between lumpy objects so that normal servicing can take place. These days though I'm back with being primarily right handed.
Right-handed.
Quote(and more likely also to be employed in electronics/software or similar.
I hadn't heard this before. Interesting. I'm not currently employed in that field, but I do that kind of stuff as a hobby, and am proficient enough at it that everyone I've ever known has told me I should be doing it for a living, as well as an aptitude test saying I should be an engineer.
Right-handed here too :P But I can use my left hand for quite a few things. Not fully ambidextrous but useful.
I don't work in Electronics, but I do work for a Web Hosting Company/Datacenter in Server Administration
I was fully ambidextrous until age sixteen when I broke my left wrist. My degree was in psychology but I worked in software and hardware for 32 years.
I use both a lot, but slightly favor the left.

Lefty. I think a lot of left handed people went through some period of ambidextrousness (not sure that's a real word). I'm an artist and a lot of my colleagues that can draw tend to be left handed too.
Right Handed and in IT... Well was until my income ceased about a year ago... Still trying to resume an income stream and in my industry of choice :-\

Right handed
I favor my left hand, but I'm ambidextrous. I work in IT and I use my mouse with my right hand. It's easier since I'm using other workstations all the time and I don't want to change it around. Plus I can use the mouse and write something at the same time and this blows people away sometimes. For some reason I only use the phone in my left ear. I can't stand using it with my right ear.
Right handed and a geeky math loving EE who also does IT.
I am ambidextrous in some things such as soldering and intricate work as well as home and auto projects. I am however a left handed bats...err woman? in cricket.
Right handed and...*drumroll* in the IT field. Or at least in school for it.
Though I mean, I use my left everything as well, writing being the exception.
Right handed. I have a degree in EE although I joined the Army and never worked in that field.

Ambidextrous, but it kinda depends on what I'm doing to some degree, some things I do better left and other things I do better right

Can still add ambidextrous to the poll if you like

My rationale was that having a preference has fairly clear definition whereas ambidextrous, where trying to define equivalence, is somewhat more difficult to discern.
I favor my right hand slightly, but am largely ambidextrous. I don't do some things as well using my left hand, but that's more of a practice issue (I practiced those things more with my right) than one of pure dexterity. The propensity towards electronics/software fields thing is really interesting. I'm a software engineer, but I also love building electronics projects.
I get that but the point I think she was trying to make and that I would make is that some of us do prefer to be ambidextrous. I prefer to do things with either or even both at the same time and trying put me into a box just doesn't fit which is why I didn't post I wrote my response instead of picking left or right for the pull above. I use them interchangeably. I can depend on both when the situation arises.

Interesting I never really thought about it but upon review I use R and L interchangably. I steer my truck 'almost' exclusively L unless it is just a matter of comfort, same for shaving, picking things up, using tools, everything. Except one thing, I write only with my right, hmmmm maybe I'll learn to change that, it may just turn into a nice Thelemic exercise (a Liber read but never performed). Dani
I scribble(can't call it writing unless its legible) with my right hand, most other things is just by whichever one is most convenient.
I'm a lefty, but a complete imbecile with computers.
I can rewire an electric guitar fifty ways without thinking though.
When I started school I naturally used my left hand for writing and drawing ect but I was made to use my right hand it's caused me a lot of confusion I think it has been one of the contributing factors to dyslexia . I can use my left hand when I'm fixing cars or computers but it is noticeably weaker than my right

Ugh, I went through all that "You write with your right hand" stuff :P
I write 60% of the time with my left hand and 40% with my right hand. ( I broke my right arm twice in 1st grade, I am very accident prone)
I eat and cut my food with my right hand
Drive with both hands
Use three computer networks. One on my left, one center and one right. I use my left and right hand for my mice. I operate and write code for some of the systems I use.
I am a mechanical engineer and deal with an lot of problems during the day and on my 2nd and 3rd shifts.
Left handedness is strong in my family. My father, my sister, her children, and I are all lefties. (None of us works in IT.)
right handed
Lefty here. Interesting how we have a disproportionate amount of left-handedness here. Isn't it supposed to be 10% of the population roughly?
One thing I always thought was funny about my handedness is that everything that may be used in violence (throwing, hitting, knives, etc) uses my right hand but everything that is used in finesse or for creative/growth purposes (eating, writing, drinking, etc) uses my left. It's like my left is good and my right is evil, heh heh.
I'm left-handed.
Ambidextrous but favor my left hand and i work in a bank
Hmm. Well I'm very much right-handed and right-brained. Yet my personality is very girly, and emotionally-tuned.
But now I think about it, all of the girls dated by the old me, were left handed.
I doubt that's 'a thing' :~D
Whoops sorry I voted without reading carefully enough. Left-handed ftm here.
I can't write well with my left hand but I can do most other things with either hand. I'm not currently working in IT but my back ground is a mix of Cisco systems (I hate networking though) and graphic design/commercial art. However I did work in cabinetry for a while around a bunch of "good ole boy's" and it made me hate life sooo much. *Grumbles*
I'm kind of a strange lefty. I write/draw left-handed, perform most daily tasks left-handed, but certain things I can do ambidextrously. I can use guns with both hands, I have my computer and gaming controls set up for right-handed use, and in a pinch I can defend myself with melee weapons right-handed.
I can use both hands for just about everything even writing, but I mainly use my right for writing. I studied in the automotive field, but the school canceled the program before I finished.
both
I am left handed and even though I am good at computers, I prefer working with people. Like in Childcare, Teaching, Aged care or maybe even psychology....

P.S. Oh and mentally I am a bimbo. Never good at engineering, math or IT stuff, but I've always liked and enjoyed using personal computers. I always thrived more at using words, writing, the spoken language, rather than math, repairing or building stuff, which really sucks, I feel so useless.
Personally, I value those skills (writing and being able to articulate thoughts well) over IT skills. I'm always striving to improve myself in those areas. You're not a "mental bimbo" at all, silly, and far from useless. I'd argue that the skills you possess are some of the most useful a person can have. :)
Ambidextrous, I can hold a glass of wine with either hand. I think it is an Australian skill thing

I love Shiraz rose wines. I can hold them with either hand too.

I never believed that stereotype. In my math and engineering classes the ones who did best were the women. Well, me included. :)
That said, I can write really well and I have been told that I should go into law or run for office. However, I don't see that happening. I don't want to be stuck with a law degree that I cannot take overseas if I ever decide to leave the U.S. So I'm an engineer and IT person. It pays the bills, I guess.
From the sample in so far it would indeed look like we tend to have a significantly higher proportion of left handers than the norm. To those therefore who still assert that being transsexual is a life choice or driven by environment; well explain this away matey? Do many of us chose to be left handed as well?
I think that when I decided not to include ambidextrous as an option it may have been the correct thing to do. It is measured to be less than 1% of the population whereas judging by the feedback we might have had 20 to 30 percent who may have selected that option. I was trying to remove subjectivity and come somewhere close to what a laboratory would judge people to be after extensive experimentation: speed, dexterity, reaction time............. throwing a knife at your face! Hopefully a few more folk will participate to make the conclusion more robust. It's quite strange, anomalous even that physically born females are less likely to be left handed than males. Brains eh? Weird things.
Right handed but do some things left handed which apparently is normal. Have been a professional cook (with schooling) but I did think of changing into electronics/IT. Maybe there is something to that. One thing I did notice while cooking on an industrial scale when people have things done to order it really does help if you can multitask which I did rather well. A fellow male cook struggles with that a bit and you kind of notice that when things need to be done yesterday under pressure:)

I am left handed, electronics and computers have been a really good way to earn a very decent living.

What about us that can use either hand?

AND instead of OR
the poll was obviously binary... :)
Nonbinary. I have better fine motion in left but my right is stronger. One handed typing is faster with the left. And I can write with either!
I am most definitely RIGHT handed....
I am "all thumbs" with my LEFT hand but it is handy for holding my cell phone while I write texts !
I am definitely left-handed. I am totally surprised by the percentages in the survey. Is there some correlation? If so, why? It does seem like a very high percentage of lefties.

I guess if I had to pick one hand I guess maybe the right hand if only because school tried the drill the use of my left hand out of me. But in truth I'll use whichever hand is free to do whatever I need to do at that moment. I have the same fine motor control with both hands.

I guess that frees the left hand to flip through the receipts?
Interesting. I've read the comments. Many many are ambidextrous like me. I used to mirror left and right drawings on the chalk board in school. I drew a tree for example with my left hand and mirrored it with my right at the same time. Everyone was amazed. But at 18 I got pissed and hit a lamppost and broke the knuckles on my left hand. Then I did not train the mobility back. I played hockey at that time. I still have a very strong slap shot. Haha
Usually very few people are ambidexter. Atleast what I've read about before.
Tony
I am so much right handed that i had a hard time to feed myself while I was still all wrapped up from carpal tunnel surgery of the right hand. When I was still smoking, the left hand as OK to hold the cigarette, but not for much else. Now it is used to hold the cell, when the right is doing important stuff!
Left Handed; IT Sales; MTF

Neither maybe? I can write a little faster right handed so right handed? I throw a ball better left handed though, so left handed? I can hit a baseball or softball harder right handed but I am more accurate left handed. I sew with my left hand but I draw with either. I paint (poorly) with my left hand. It's hard for me to put on makeup with my right hand, mascara brush on the eyeball sucks let me tell you. I always hand something to or take something from someone with my right hand. I ah, well you know, left handed. Stirring, chopping is either, kitchen altogether is a wash.
Really strange, I will only take a baby with my right hand behind their head, I will make them switch before handing the baby over. No idea why, I guess that I am trying to be so careful, my niece is left handed and it was really natural handing her son back and forth. Now he is four and we argue over who needs to step in when he is being a monster. Your child, your problem baby girl. Sucks being an adult. Another story that.
Is it important which hand is dominant?
