Students were told a male student, who was going to have sexual reassignment surgery in coming months would be living as a female in the dorm. Chauncey immediately called Duke leaders. "I told him that if I was coming across as concerned I wasn't communicating properly... I was outraged," the concerned father said.

A male student at Duke University who is awaiting sex-change procedures was allowed to use a women's restroom and showers over the weekend, university officials said.

Larry Mineta, vice president over student affairs, said the student moved into a new room Tuesday that has a private bathroom.

I don't get the outrage really, if
she's getting SRS in a few month, what was the problem?
At least, they seem to have found a temp solution so
the wackos don't go crazy.

I wonder how her situation was leaked anyway; this should never had been known by anyone unless someone in the registrars office talked or she's truly unpassable.

Keira,

I completely agree.  Why was this made public in the first place?  This should have been confidential information unless the student is one of those flag waving types who wants to make a point.  I really think stealth would have been the best option here.  I have a friend who lived in the women's dorm in stealth with the university's permission, and it went just fine.  But hey, who wouldn't want a room with a private bathroom if given a choice?

While it might be nice that the student got a room with a private bathroom, but that skirts the real issues.  What does she do when she is across campus?  Hold it all day until she can get to her room.  Where is the non- discrimination policy.  And as others asked, who put this in the public eye and what was their purpose?
